It looks like work has finally begun on the disused land on Great Ancoats Street.

A new green space has been planned for the 10 acres of dilapidated land that used to be the Central Retail Park, which has been closed since 2019.

Since the land was purchased by the council for £37 million two years ago, the space has remained empty after plans for a pay-and-display car park were cancelled following massive local backlash.

The Government Property Agency has acquired 5 acres of the land on which they plan to construct a ‘state-of-the-art government digital campus’. The new office complex will bring together a number of Civil Service departments and be home to around 7,000 jobs.

Around 2.4 acres of the remainder of the land is set to become new green space, which will connect with the existing Cotton Field Park on New Islington Marina.

NEW MARKET HALL PLANS FOR ANCOATS MOT GARAGE

Plans are in place for a new market hall venue to be built on the site of an MOT garage in Ancoats.

Drawings have been submitted to the council for approval for an ‘independent market, housing individual stalls’ on the site on Gun Street in Ancoats, between the Express Building and the Edinburgh Castle.

It’s currently the site of the Blossom Motor Company, which has been running as a garage since the 1940s.

Proposed entrances to the market will be on both Gun Street and Henry Street to the rear, opposite the likes of Norah Store and wine shop Kerb.

The Ancoats legends posted the sad news on their socials, saying: “Closing down party - Sunday 2nd March 2025, details TBA.

“After 11 years, we’re unfortunately joining the chorus of independent businesses in Manchester and beyond, calling it a day.

“Although Ancoats was an amazing area for us to embark on our bricks & mortar dream, the cost increases from Brexit, Covid, Energy, VAT (halving it would save a lot in the industry), BB Loans etc has meant it’s unviable in its current form - we would’ve had to increase prices much more than we’d be comfortable with to get the margins we need to keep going.

“It’s an extremely tough decision given it’s 15 years since the idea was born in my early 20s - then 3 mates whilst working other jobs began building it from scratch every weekend, to then quitting our jobs and taking a leap of full-time faith. Ultimately, we need to listen to the head, not the heart.

“We wanted to give enough notice to support our amazing team in finding new jobs, making sure all our suppliers are paid up and provide our supportive customers with the last chance to eat/drink/party with us.”

THE EDINBURGH CASTLE HAVE A NEW HEAD CHEF AND ARE LAUNCHING A NEW MENU

Ancoats pub and dining room have announced the appointment of their new head chef, Gabe Lea, who will be launching a new menu of classic, seasonal dishes with nods to classic French cooking.

Lea’s impressive CV includes world-class kitchens such as Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons under Raymond Blanc, The French under Simon Rogan and Northcote with Lisa Allen, and more recently Maya – which he helped land a spot in the Michelin Guide just weeks after opening. He will take over from Shaun Moffat.

Speaking of his latest appointment, Gabe said: “I’m really excited to join the team at Edinburgh Castle and looking forward to what we can achieve together. The pub and restaurant have a great reputation and I look forward to building on that with classical dishes, great flavours and working closely with our suppliers to bring forward great menus in line with the seasons.”
