Sickle Cell Care Manchester Sickle Cell Care Manchester is a community orientated charitable organisation run by people whose lives have been affected by Sickle Cell Disease.

Sickle Cell Disease (also known as Sickle Cell Disorder or Sickle Cell Anaemia) is an inherited condition that affects the red blood cells and can lead to episodes of severe pain or can damage organs and tissues, and may lead to other serious medical problems. Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) mostly affects people of African and African Caribbean origin, but the condition has been known to affect individuals of any ethnicity. Most people living with Sickle Cell Disease spend 90%- 95% of their time living in the community. However, Sickle Cell Disease can be a life threatening condition, so that stays in hospital and the intervention of medical professionals are also important in an affected person’s life. Our Sickle Cell Capacity Building Event has gone really well today.

Speakers included:

Dr Carol Sampson who spoke about brain fog and sickle.

Dr Claudine Matthews who discussed the role of nutrition in managing sickle cell.

Dr Nandini Sadasivam who explained the process people go through for gene editing.

DR Jennifer Darlow who is talking about the transition from paediatrics to adult services.

Supporting someone with sickle cell disease can mean helping them navigate appointments, services and everyday challenges. Our Capacity Building Event includes a focus on navigating healthcare as carers.

People living with sickle cell disease and their carers are invited to join us this Saturday to learn, connect and spend time with other people in the sickle community.

Living with a chronic condition like Sickle Cell while trying to navigate university, early careers, and relationships takes a toll on mental health. ❤️🩹

​At Sickle Cell Care Manchester, we want to break down the stigma and provide 16–24-year-olds with a relaxed setting to recharge, reflect, and share advice.
