Good to be at this afternoon's Greater Manchester Equality Alliance (GM=EqAl) with Andy Burnham Mayor of Greater Manchester discussing social housing and the new Housing First strategy moving forward.

From May there will be a new GM Good Landlord Charter seeking to empower tenants who are currently disempowered in housing. For those landlords who do not sign up, are looking to give power to tenants to have property check to ensure properties are fit for purpose and tenants are not being abused. End of line where private renters do not behave properly would be compulsory purchase.

Looking at how, in the current mayoral term, will be able to build 10,000 new, net-zero homes. Linked to reforms to right to buy. Need to reverse situation where there is a net loss of social housing.

Also need to ensure sufficient social housing and unacceptable situation with asylum-seekers and refugees including quality of housing and evictions. Andy lambasted Serco’s approach. Mooted that local authorities could be brought back into management of housing.

Andy would love to see VCFSE organisations making our voice heard. He agreed that we should move to a non-profit basis for government investment in social housing and housing of refugees.

Also responded about traveller sites and care-experienced young people. He thinks all local authorities have sites but it certainly needs to be reviewed. Equity for care-experienced young people should be considered and possibly priority access for social housing.

Is conscious of age and identity appropriate housing. Faith communities can clearly take a role in helping with provision.

Other issues raised included around ensuring new housing includes sufficient with assistive technology for those with disabilities, provision of supported housing, and safe housing for people from different ethnic and identity backgrounds.

Hello Buddy is a newly formed charity, number 1202908. It was founded by Michelle Moses to bring together children of all faiths and none.

She has organised a free arts and crafts holiday camp from 09:30 – 15:30 on October 21, 22, and 23 at Maccabi on Bury Old Road, for children aged 7-12. The initiative is supported by the Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester.

The attached flyer gives more details, and you can get an application form from [email protected]

Young children benefit from getting to know children of other faiths from an early an age as possible.

Michelle would also appreciate hearing from people who can help out. Please email her directly.
