BikeSafe

BikeSafe UK's #1 police-led motorcycle safety initiative. Join us for a 'skills check-up'. The main aim is to reduce the number of bikers being hurt on the roads.

BikeSafe is a police led motorcycle project that is run by most forces throughout the UK. We think that riding should be fun and by improving skills, knowledge and hazard awareness it will hopefully make riding safer and more enjoyable. The BikeSafe workshop explores the main riding hazards that you as a biker face. By delivering theory presentations and observed rides, a BikeSafe workshop will he

lp you discover your strengths and weaknesses and also where to go next to develop and get more from your biking. BikeSafe is about starting on the right path to development as it “Bridges the Gap”. Riders should continue to train throughout their riding years and not just stop once they have passed their bike test. Having enjoyed a BikeSafe workshop or ride out, the next natural step that we actively encourage is post test motorcycle training from either – I.A.M. (Institute of Advanced Motorists) RoSPA (Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents) or E.R.S. ( The Enhanced Rider Scheme ).

Great news! A detailed evaluation of BikeSafe has highlighted the role it plays in supporting rider development, hazard awareness, and safer riding.

The evaluation, conducted by Dr Elizabeth Box of ECM Research Solutions and funded by The Road Safety Trust, was commissioned during the 25th anniversary of the police-led rider improvement scheme.

It found that BikeSafe is associated with positive short-term changes in rider confidence, hazard perception, and safer riding practices, and that although evidence of long-term outcomes remains limited, the scheme is well positioned to continue contributing to safer riding as part of the wider road safety system.

Almost 400 BikeSafe clients were surveyed during the research project. Key findings indicate that:

☑️ BikeSafe is experienced as a high-quality, credible intervention, with participants reporting high levels of satisfaction, relevance, and trust in the programme and its police-led delivery.

☑️ The observed ride and personalised feedback are central to the programme’s impact, with riders identifying these elements as the most valuable aspects of the BikeSafe experience. The evaluation found that these components support self-reflection, hazard awareness, and safer riding decision-making, aligning strongly with established behaviour change techniques and BikeSafe’s underlying theory of change.

☑️ Positive short-term improvements were identified in rider confidence, hazard perception, and self-reported safer riding practices following participation in BikeSafe.

☑️ BikeSafe appears to function as a gateway into further rider development, with many participants reporting that they had undertaken, or intended to undertake, further accredited post-test training following BikeSafe.

☑️ Access and awareness influence participation, with cost, course availability, travel distance, and programme visibility identified as key factors in shaping engagement and wider reach.

It’s another bank holiday weekend and it looks like we’re in for a scorcher (in most places, anyway).

That means it should be a cracking opportunity to get out on the bike – just don’t be tempted to cut any corners when it comes to wearing your protective gear.

Also, make sure you stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids before you set off. If it’s a long one, make the time on your journey to stop, stretch your legs and rehydrate again.

Our BikeSafe volunteers love working the bank holiday (no, really they do!) and there’s still some availability at workshops around the UK this weekend and for the rest of the month if you fancy joining them:

🏍️ Ripley, Derbys (23 May)
🏍️ Pontypool, Gwent (24 May)
🏍️ Colwyn Bay, N Wales (24 May)
🏍️ Havant, Hants (27 May)
🏍️ Huntingdon, Cambs (30 May)
🏍️ Spennymoor, Durham (30 May)
🏍️ Besford, Worcs (30 May)
🏍️ Northampton, Northants (31 May)

To book and for all current workshop availability please visit www.bikesafe.co.uk

Have you thought about doing a BikeSafe workshop but not quite sure what it entails or how you’ll feel about it?

We recently received the below review from a participant in one of our Wiltshire sessions. Huge thanks to Gary Hewitt-Long for taking the time to provide such a detailed insight of the day itself and his reflections on what he learned and experienced.

Really pleasing to read this, Rob - you've captured perfectly the experience of many of our clients, and what we set out to achieve with BikeSafe. Happy riding! 😃🏍️

Social media is full of motorcycle content. Wheelies on public roads. Filtering at extreme speeds. Pack riding at 100mph. It gets millions of views. And for younger riders especially, it sets a benchmark for what "good riding" looks like.

We've been at the roadside when it goes wrong. The rider who got the views doesn't look impressive to the paramedic working on them in the road.

Real skill is quiet. It's reading a corner before you're committed to it. Smooth braking that happens early. Decisions made with enough time to get them right.
That's the riding culture worth promoting — and it's what BikeSafe and advanced rider training actually develops.

What is the one skill that us riders think we're really good at but we're actually not? BikeSafe's Police riders know.

We’re now into May (where is the year going?), which means two bank holidays this month and some fantastic opportunities to get out on the bike.

Chances are there will be plenty of motorcyclists out on the road so all motorists are encouraged to take care and be extra vigilant, checking mirrors frequently and allowing sufficient room for bikes.

As riders, we also have an important role to play in ensuring our own safety by travelling at an appropriate speed for the road, weather and traffic conditions.

You should also be careful when cornering bends, wear high-visibility clothing and ensure you ride within your capabilities and always wearing a helmet and other appropriate attire.

As we head into the first of the two bank holiday weekends, we’ve got workshop availability in some areas of the country, including:

🏍️Derbyshire (Ripley)
🏍️Lincolnshire (Lincoln)
🏍️Durham (Spennymoor)
🏍️Dublin (Garda HQ)

Why not give yourself a bank holiday treat and give those riding skills a check? For full workshop availability this month and throughout the year, visit www.bikesafe.co.uk

We had a great turnout for the BikeSafe Coordinators Conference yesterday, held at Derbyshire Police HQ.

More than 30 police forces were represented at the event, which gave us the opportunity to reflect on another successful year and work together to identify opportunities to improve BikeSafe even further in the future.

We were also joined by our colleagues from UKROEd, who earlier this year took on the administration and governance of BikeSafe. They provided an overview of the past 12 months and outlined what 2026 might hold for the scheme.

We’re now just about done and dusted for 2025, but we’ll be back early in the New Year to advise of when bookings will re-open and any other news we can bring you.

Many thanks as always to all of our followers and to those who did a workshop this year. We hope you have a wonderful and – most importantly – safe Christmas!
