There’s not long left this year to get your riding checked by one of our expert police motorcyclists.

Yes, it’s that time of the year when our BikeSafe season starts heading into the home straight and draws to a close for 2026.

Some parts of the country have already finished for the year, and we want to place on record our thanks to the police coordinators in those areas for their time and dedication, and of course, to those of you who have attended one of their workshops – we truly hope you enjoyed your day and have benefited from their expertise.

If you’ve been meaning to book but never quite got round to it, then it’s better late than never. With the conditions becoming ever more autumnal, now might be a great time to get involved.

We do still have workshops running throughout October and November in several police force areas around the country, with availability including:

It’s probably fair to say that summer has passed and autumn is well on the way.

This change brings with it some different challenges out on the bike, with wetter roads, fallen leaves, wind and rain all common features of the season.

Now might be the perfect time to get those riding skills checked, and BikeSafe is the perfect vehicle (pun intended!) to pick up a few tips – with our workshops led by expert police bikers.

The weather gods look like they may be against us, with soggy conditions pouring cold water on a sunny bank holiday weekend.

We know that won’t dampen the spirits for many of you, though, so it’s important to make sure you ride in a way that is appropriate for wet weather – which can significantly reduce grip, visibility and braking performance.

Please bear the following advice in mind:

🌧️ Slow down and leave more space between you and other road users. Stopping distances are longer on wet roads.
🌧️ Brake earlier and more gently to avoid skidding, especially when approaching junctions, bends and crossings.
🌧️ Avoid sudden movements, such as harsh braking, rapid acceleration or sharp turns.
🌧️ Watch out for slippery surfaces including road markings, metal covers, leaves and mud, which can become particularly hazardous when wet.
🌧️ Use lights and wear bright or reflective clothing to help other road users see you in poor visibility.
🌧️ Check your tyres regularly and make sure they are properly inflated and have sufficient tread for good grip.
🌧️ Keep your bike well maintained, ensuring brakes, tyres and lights are in good working order before setting off.

BikeSafe is a course run by bikers, for bikers. Delivered by officers from the Roads Policing Unit, we welcome riders of all abilities and experience, who are looking for a refresher or a chance to further develop their skills.

We can tell you this is a fantastic course – but maybe better to see what recent attendees have said:

“To everyone who is thinking about BikeSafe, get it booked and give it a go. No matter what you ride the people who ran the course in Lincoln have experienced all aspects of riding and can really help touching up on bad habits, or teaching something new that you may not have experienced.”
