There was no allotments today as the weather forecast foretold of terrible weather, but looked like a lovely day in the end!

Speaking of an incorrect forecast, did you know Weather forecasts are inaccurate mainly because the Earth's atmosphere is a chaotic system where tiny, unmeasured changes grow into massive errors over time.

And here are some more fun facts about the weather:

The Butterfly Effect Was Born From Weather! In 1961, mathematician Edward Lorenz tried to run a computer weather model. When he rounded a starting number from 0.506127 down to 0.506 (an error of less than one part in a thousand), the computer spat out a completely different, unrelated weather pattern.

The "Wet Bias" Secret! Commercial weather apps and local TV stations sometimes intentionally inflate rain chances, turning a 10% chance into a 30% chance, because people get much angrier when a surprise storm ruins a beach day than when a predicted shower never shows up.

The Michael Fish Curse! During the 1987 Great Storm in the UK, famous BBC weatherman Michael Fish famously told viewers not to worry about a hurricane, only for hurricane-force winds to slam southeast England that very night. (Ironically, it wasn’t technically a "hurricane" by strict meteorological definition, meaning he was technically right, though the public never forgave him).

And your fun facts of today are about… you guessed it! Rain! ☔️

Hamburger bun shape! As a water drop falls, air resistance flattens its bottom side, giving it a shape like a small bun or jellybean instead of a tear shape.

Not just water! Other worlds have exotic rain—Venus sees sulfuric acid rain, Saturn experiences a rain of diamonds, and an exoplanet called HD 189733b gets rain made of glass.

Phantom rain! In hot and dry regions, rain can evaporate before it ever touches the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

First Cash Machine (ATM)! On June 27, 1967, Barclays installed the world's first-ever automated teller machine (ATM) in Enfield Town, London. British actor Reg Varney was the very first person to withdraw cash from it.

First UK Credit Card! Barclays introduced the United Kingdom's first credit card, Barclaycard, in 1966.

First UK Female Bank Manager! In 1958, Barclays broke industry ground by appointing Hilda Harding as the first female bank manager in the UK.

Today we took a trip to China with our under 25s cooking!

We made egg-fried rice and a Chinese-fusion chicken curry!

And our social night went well, we hope everyone enjoyed themselves 🤗

Now for some fun facts:

Egg fried rice was originally invented during China's Sui Dynasty (589–618 CE) in Yangzhou as a practical way to use up leftover rice and prevent food waste.

Day-old rice works best for fried rice because letting it cool and dry reduces moisture, which stops the grains from sticking together and turning mushy in the hot wok.

Long before it became a takeout favorite, the dish started as a simple survival meal for people to stretch scarce food and use cheap, fast-cooking eggs instead of expensive meat.

Today’s Indoor Kurling was really fun!

Blue Team took home the win and gracefully boo’d the Red Team out the building 🫣

Here a little fun fact or two as to why we always use Red and Blue in most competitions using teams:

Cold War Symbolism: Modern "Red Team vs. Blue Team" cybersecurity and simulation exercises started during the Cold War. Red represented the opposing communist nations (like the Soviet Union and China) and their red flags, while blue represented Western allies.

Cheap 19th-Century Dyes: When organized sports like football surged in popularity during the late 1800s, red and blue were the cheapest and most widely available cloth dyes. This made them the default choice for early club founders.

A fantastic day on the Allotments, getting a few jobs done and even a little harvesting of pumpkins!

Speaking of pumpkins, here are some fun facts;

They are fruits! Pumpkins are classified as fruits because they contain seeds and grow from flowers. They are specifically a type of berry called a pepo.

They are mostly water! Pumpkins are about 90% water, which helps explain why they are so heavy for their size.

Every part is edible! You can eat the skin, leaves, flowers, pulp, and seeds of a pumpkin.

Huge growth! The world record for the heaviest pumpkin is over 2,700 pounds (about 1,225 kilograms).

Monday has come again! This week there is no Film club, however there is still plenty to do!
Today we have our under 25s craft club from 6pm, and it might be a bit of a stretch but today they are crafting their very own delicious brownies! I personally am looking forward to the finished product!

Tuesday we will be on our allotments again from 11am, doing some more prep work for the colder seasons, maybe some winter planting? 🤔
All while we get ready for a bigger project coming soon, so watch this space!

Wednesday we have our Indoor Kurling from 12:30pm

Thursday we have two activities on! Both starting at 6pm, firstly we have our social evening with some bingo! And then we have our under 25s cooking!

Friday, at 11am we have our usual coffee morning followed by chair based exercise at 1pm!

Today is International Blessings of The Fishing Fleet Day 🙏so here's some Fun Facts about this essential and occasionally dangerous industry 😉
Small vessels, under 10 metres, make up around 79% of of the UKs fishing fleet 🇬🇧
But, they account for about only 8% of the catch 🐟
Large vessels, over 15 metres, account for about 10% but account for about 85% of the catch as they can stay at sea for much longer 😊
The Fishing Industry makes over a billion pounds a year for the country and creates thousands of jobs 😃
The Kirkella is Britain's biggest fishing vessel at 81 metres (266 feet) long and 3,976 tonnes 😱
