Sharing an urgent appeal: Help bring Padmaprabha home

We've learned of an urgent situation facing a member of our wider Buddhist community. Padmaprabha, a former Dharmacharini who lives in Lewes with her husband Jnanabandhu, a Triratna Dharmachari, suffered a brain haemorrhage while the couple were on holiday in Croatia. She is currently in intensive care there, and doctors have told the family that Croatia is unable to provide the specialist treatment she needs.

The options to get Padmaprabha safely home to the UK for the care she urgently requires are either by road in an ambulance, costing £20,700, or by specially equipped medical flight, costing £30,000. Their travel insurance covers her medical treatment in Croatia but does not extend to repatriation. Time is critical — without returning to the UK, she cannot get the critical care she needs. Padmaprabha and Jnanabandhu's daughter has set up a GoFundMe appeal to raise the funds, but the total has not yet been reached.

On being a trustee - Shraddhalocani

I asked to become an Abhayaratna trustee in 2012/13 having witnessed or heard about a number of our pioneers finding themselves in difficulties financially after years in service to the movement. These weren’t the ‘movers and shakers’ in the Order they were Order members who had helped set up Centres, taught for years, held positions of responsibility and now in their declining years were really struggling financially and with social isolation. I found this heartbreaking and wanted to support what was at the time a little known Triratna charity .

I still find it inspiring to hear from Order members being courageous enough to come forward and ask for help, I recognise it’s not easy. These days the requests come from a much wider cross section of OMs. I know I am fortunate to be able to support myself financially yet not everyone is able to do this and requests these days are often for more than help with retreats and travel ; a mattress , a car repair, a pair of new glasses are pretty typical requests where money is tight. And then there are our sisters and brothers in India, and Order members living in isolation in foreign countries. There is so much to do and I want to continue to support our wonderful Order through the Trust’s work world wide.

One way that we were able to help out with a grant.

'Following redundancy in December 2024 and living on basic Universal Credit income of £400 pcm since, additional expenses such as prescription glasses would simply not be possible. Thanks to the generosity of Abhayaratna Trust donors, I was able to apply for a grant of £237, (the government subsidised rate for those receiving benefits), for the purchase of two new pairs of spectacles. My thanks also to the Abhayaratna Trustees for approving this grant.' Aryadhi, Norwich Sangha

Ghosaka writes: ‘I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to become a part of the team at the Abhayaratna Trust and to contribute to the excellent work that the Trustees and the team have been doing for many years. I have been a follower and supporter of the Trust for some time and I have been impressed, moved and inspired by the work of the Trust. The motto Metta in Action seems very apposite to me and it is inspiring to see the kindness, care and friendship that is evident in the way the Order and movement respond to requests for help and assistance for those in need. I feel excited, and indeed fortunate, to play a part in continuing and developing the work that the Abhayaratna Trust does.

As we approach the end of the year it's customary to look back at what we've achieved over the past twelve months. The headline for the Abhayaratna Trust is that we've helped some 225 Order members in financial hardship around the world.
