Manchester High School for Girls

Manchester High School for Girls MHSG is a leading independent girls' day school in South Manchester, for ages 3 to 18.

Manchester High School for Girls was founded in 1874 “To impart to the girls the very best education which can be given and to fit them for any future which may be before them”. Today, the School upholds these founding principles by encouraging each individual pupil to achieve educational excellence across a broad range of learning opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom. For each pup

il, this all-round education fosters an awareness of their own value and a sense of responsibility towards others, both within our community and across the wider world.

On Monday, our Head Mistress, Mrs Jeys, delivered her inaugural speech as the incoming President of the Girls’ Schools Association (GSA) at the 2026 GSA Summer Briefing. During her address, Mrs Jeys launched her strapline: 'The Voice of the Girl. Raised to lead. Ready to be heard.'

In her speech, Mrs Jeys said: “During my presidency, I want us to work together to prioritise and amplify the voice of our girls across the country, in all of our schools, who are growing up in a world that in many ways has gone backwards for them. And yet, our girls are extraordinary and inspiring. The question is, are we listening hard enough, and are we bold enough to amplify what they are telling us?

“I want us to work together to be the central and driving voice for girls’ education. The GSA is the home of girls’ schools’ headship. If we don’t speak for girls and young women and single-sex schools, who will?”

The great escape, round two! This morning our second family of ducks made it safely from their nest in our library courtyard, waddling through our corridors (where their little feet couldn't quite keep up!) and out across the car park into neighbouring Platt Fields Park lake. 🦆 🐤 🐤 🐤

Duck families have been nesting annually in MHSG's grounds since at least the 1980s, and we're thrilled that two pairs felt safe enough to join us again this year. We already can't wait to see how many ducklings emerge next year!

Thank you to our school staff, including Library, Maintenance, and PE, who helped to safely navigate the little ducks to their new home.

This week, our Senior and Sixth Form students joined in the Rose Garden as part of this year's Pride celebrations. Students had the opportunity to make bracelets, decorate biscuits and buy Pride merch in support of The Proud Trust, an organisation that supports LGBTQ+ young people, empowering them to be proud of who they are. Together students raised £133! 🎉

At MHSG we are proud to foster an atmosphere of inclusivity, and we strive to ensure that every member of our school community feels that crucial sense of belonging. Huge thank you to all those who attended and helped raise funds, to Mrs Purvis, our Director of Pupil Progress and Outreach, as well as our Sixth Form Diversity Captains, Lily and Tabitha, along with other students, who helped set up, manage, and run the event.

Huge congratulations to our fantastic Maths team for their performance in the UKMT Team Maths Challenge National Finals! Our Year 8 and 9 Mathematicians competed against 60 other teams from across the country, representing MHSG with pride.

The UKMT Team Maths Challenge is a series of fast-paced competitions run by the UK Mathematics Trust, where teams test their logic, maths skill, communication and speed. This year the students had to research and prepare a poster on Japanese Temple Geometry, which they were then tested on at the competition. As one of just a handful of girls-only teams at the competition, we are incredibly proud of our Senior School mathematicians!

Lucy recently headed to All England Dance Regional (North) Finals, where she won the 13 Years Global category and the Intermediate Global Trio/Quartet - an incredible achievement, qualifying in two categories!

As a result, Lucy will be heading to the National Finals in July, and she has already begun her preparations as she gears up to compete against dancers from across the country. As she continues on her Dance journey, Lucy is delighted to be starting GCSE Dance in September with our Dance Lead, Miss Robinson. Congratulations and good luck Lucy!🌟

Last week our GCSE Religious Studies students headed to London! The group visited two places of worship, Westminster Abbey and the Buddhapadipa Temple in Wimbledon, bringing to life various aspects of the GCSE curriculum, as well as the Natural History Museum, where they explored the Evolution exhibition as part of their thematic studies of the origins of life.

During their packed itinerary, the group also managed to squeeze in some time for sightseeing around the capital, including a visit to the West End to see The Lion King! Whilst on their Thames boat trip they even spotted the Red Arrows flying over for the Trooping the Colour celebrations! A memorable trip in many ways.
