Justlife

Justlife Charity advocating for people who are hidden homeless and living in temporary accommodation.

We prevent people living in temporary accommodation in Brighton and Manchester from falling into rough sleeping by addressing their health, housing and wellbeing needs, alongside research & policy work to identify long-term solutions to homelessness. Our mission is to make people’s stay in temporary accommodation as short, safe and healthy as possible. Short
by providing guidance on what people's

next steps away from homelessness should be, helping them overcome barriers to living independently, and shaping a plan to secure permanent residence. Safe
by working with landlords to improve living conditions, using resident's lived experiences to inform policy recommendations, and engaging with policy makers to drive change for residents. Healthy
by facilitating improvements to people's mental and physical health, improving access to medical support, and providing resources to take better care of their wellbeing.

It’s not every day that talking about homelessness leads to an afternoon with football legends.

Last week, our Director of Income and Development, Fran, had the pleasure of attending the Best of British Brighton lunch as a guest of Extech Cloud.

It was a fantastic afternoon, with Harry Redknapp and John Inverdale sharing stories from their long careers in football. Just as importantly, it gave us the opportunity to say a huge thank you to the Extech Cloud team for their ongoing support of Justlife.

Over the years, Extech Cloud has generously provided pro bono tech support, helping us keep things running smoothly behind the scenes so we can focus on supporting people living in temporary accommodation. They've also backed our Christmas Big Give campaign, helping us raise even more for people experiencing homelessness.

We were also delighted to see so much support for Guild Care throughout the event. It's always inspiring to see local businesses and charities coming together to make a difference in their communities.

Support doesn't always happen on the frontline. Sometimes it's the expertise, generosity and partnerships behind the scenes that help charities achieve more and create a bigger impact for the people they support.

Thank you, Extech Cloud, for everything you do to support Justlife and the wider charity sector. 💙

"People come out of prison, they die, and it goes unnoticed. These deaths are avoidable."

As Enver Solomon from points out, the current system is failing prison leavers.

Rising homelessness on release from prison is the key driver behind record numbers of deaths within two weeks of release.

Even when the worst outcomes don't occur, we know that people leaving prison straight into homelessness are around twice as likely to reoffend as those released into secure accommodation. The result is a cycle of homelessness and reoffending.

That's why support matters.

In Manchester, our Specialist Support Workers help prison leavers improve their housing, health, resilience and social connections. They offer support at every step, from completing crucial forms and attending probation appointments to advocating for people and making sure they know they have someone to walk alongside them.

Because a second chance is about more than simply leaving prison. It's about having the support, stability and opportunities needed to move forward safely, rebuild their lives, and contribute to their communities.

The stories behind these statistics are heartbreaking. Read the articles linked below to understand why so many people are being released into homelessness, and the devastating consequences that can follow.

Today marks the start of Pride Month.

At Justlife, we are using this moment to highlight the experiences of LGBTQ+ people living in temporary accommodation.

Homelessness is never just about housing. For many LGBTQ+ people, it can come after rejection, abuse, family breakdown or years of feeling unsafe.

Temporary accommodation can bring its own challenges. Shared spaces. Unfamiliar buildings. Fear of judgement. Having to hide who you are just to feel safe.

That matters because good support is built on trust. And trust is hard to build when someone feels they cannot be themselves.

This piece follows the journey and hurdles that LGBTQ+ people face through temporary accommodation, and looks at what needs to change so support is safe, respectful and human.

Temporary accommodation must be short, safe and healthy for everyone.

Pride Month is a time to celebrate, but also to ask harder questions. For many LGBTQ+ people, homelessness is shaped by rejection, abuse and fear. Our…

Anthony, Jack, Mike, Amy and Ademola from Form Property all went the extra mile yesterday, running to support people experiencing homelessness in temporary accommodation at the Great Manchester Run 🏃

So far, they’ve raised a brilliant £650. This will help provide vital support to people living in TA, from practical help with housing, health and welfare, to building confidence, connection and a route towards something safer and more stable.

You can still support their efforts by donating to help people living in temporary accommodation.

We’re so incredibly grateful to have received £120,000 from Manchester City Council's Our Manchester.

The funding will enable our team to continue and expand our work. Our frontline team in Manchester provides vital, person-centred support to people experiencing homelessness in temporary accommodation.

This includes helping people navigate complex housing, health and welfare systems, improve their wellbeing, build confidence, reconnect with their community and take steps towards safer, more stable housing.

For people too often left isolated and unsupported in temporary accommodation, this kind of consistent, trauma-informed support can truly be life-changing.

In the last year alone, our team supported

• 89% to improve their physical health

• 92% to improve their mental health

• 87% to reduce their substance misuse

• 92% to improve their financial situation

• 95% people have improved confidence and self-esteem.

This support is the foundation for better, more stable, and more secure futures. A big thanks once again to Manchester City Council's Our Manchester. This work wouldn’t be possible without their funding and support.

We’ve got something brilliant to share.

Justlife has secured £50,000 in funding from Garfield Weston Foundation.
We’re incredibly grateful to Garfield Weston Foundation. This funding will help us continue working alongside people experiencing homelessness in temporary accommodation across Brighton and Manchester, while also pushing for better standards and stronger support for everyone living in temporary accommodation.

Because this work is about more than services. It’s about enabling people to reach their potential and a future where stays in temporary accommodation are short, safe and healthy.

Every day, our frontline teams provide intensive, trauma-informed, one-to-one support for people living in temporary accommodation. Support that helps people improve their mental and physical health, rebuild confidence, reconnect with their community and take steps towards safer, longer-term housing.

Alongside this, our research and campaigning work helps shine a light on the realities of temporary accommodation, ensuring the voices of those living in TA are heard by decision-makers. We bring people together, identifying where change is possible, and advocate for long-term solutions.

This funding is a huge boost, and we’re incredibly grateful for it.
But it doesn’t cover the full cost of delivering this vital work.

If you’d like to stand alongside funders like Garfield Weston Foundation and help people rebuild their lives, you can donate below.

Justlife is proud to stand alongside Just Fair and 76 organisations across the UK in signing a joint letter marking 50 years since the UK ratified the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

These rights, to housing, food, healthcare, education, decent work, and social security, are the foundations people should be able to rely on to live well.

Yet too many, including thousands in temporary accommodation, are still denied them.

This campaign is about turning long-standing commitments into reality.

“We had to watch our happy-go-lucky child disappear.”

That’s a sentence that will strike fear into every parent. It’s also the grim reality for far too many parents navigating homelessness in temporary accommodation with their children.

Our team visited the ‘Playhouse Tent’, a creative experience inspired by the testimonies of families with neurodiverse children in temporary accommodation.

It brought home what no family should have to endure: children overwhelmed by unsuitable living conditions. Overcrowding, volatile residents, and a lack of basic childproofing, to name just a few.

Temporary accommodation should be a place where families are kept safe. It should protect, not traumatise.

Families across England deserve so much better than accommodation that harms the children it is meant to shelter.

The ‘playhouse tent’ is based on the report, It’s like torture: Life in Temporary Accommodation for Neurodivergent Children and their Families, written by Katherine Bricknell, Dr Rosalie Warnock and Miranda Keast.

You can read the testimonies and learn how we can better protect neurodivergent children and their families in temporary accommodation at the link below.

741 people died while living in temporary accommodation in London over three years.

Unfortunately, as devastating as this number is, we weren’t shocked but definitely very saddened. Thank you to Jack Shaw and Inside Housing for this reporting.

Temporary accommodation is meant to be a short-term safety net. Too often, it has become somewhere people are left for months or years, in poor conditions, without the support they need to stay safe, healthy and connected.

At Justlife, we work with people living in temporary accommodation every day.
We see the impact on children and families. But we also see the despair faced by single adults who receive very little support from the system that has failed them.

People are struggling with poor mental health. People living with trauma. People are isolated from healthcare, support networks and community. People are placed somewhere that is supposed to help them move on, but instead makes life harder to survive.

Every death in temporary accommodation should force us to ask hard questions.
Was the accommodation safe?
Was the person supported?
Did anyone know they were struggling?
Did the system step in before the crisis became a tragedy?

This cannot just be treated as a housing issue. It is also a health issue, a safeguarding issue and a poverty issue. We urgently need clear national standards for temporary accommodation. That must include the phased extension of the Decent Homes Standard.

But standards alone will not be enough.

People need proper support while they are there. Support to access healthcare, mental health services, benefits, schools, community connections and the practical help needed to move on.

Temporary accommodation should protect people from homelessness.
It should never become another place where they are put at risk.

More than 700 people have died in temporary accommodation in London between 2022-23 and 2024-25, according to new data shared exclusively with Inside Housing.
