Student volunteers are involved in organising every facet of MIMUC so there's plenty to do and whatever your strengths there's ways for you to help. Want JANE STREET to notice you? Use the MIMUC 2026 CV drop-off.
How it works?
On both Wednesday 11th and Thursday 12th March, we will have a virtual CV drop-box for MIMUC attendees to upload a virtual copy of their CV. Please do NOT print a physical copy of your CV. After the event, these CVs will be sent directly to Jane Street.

Can anyone do it?
This opportunity is only available for MIMUC attendees so make sure you attend at least one session on either day. Otherwise, there are no restrictions.

Join us 12-1pm on Thursday 12th March in Frank Adams 1&2 of the Alan Turing Building to learn more about postgraduate study and the world of academia. Then stay with us 1-2pm in the ATB kitchen & bridge just outside for a networking lunch featuring free pizza!

MEET AYESHA IRFAN!
Ayesha's talk "Welcome to MIMUC: Icebreaker and Intro to Maths Communication" is taking place at 12pm on Wednesday 11th March in room G.205 of the Alan Turing Building.

About Ayesha:
Ayesha is a final year PhD student in Mathematics at the University of Bristol. She works on the intersection between Random Matrix Theory which emerged from Mathematical Physics and Number Theory. She is also a Data Scientist at Naimuri, a data intelligence company based in Manchester.

About the talk:
This session serves as both an icebreaker and an introduction to the world mathematics communication, as well as an icebreaker. We will cover some useful advice on explaining mathematics to different audiences and how to present complex ideas clearly.

MEET DR CHARLOTTE MÉGROURÈCH!
Charlotte's talk "Looping Mathematics: Is this Mathematics?" is taking place at 3pm on Wednesday 11th March in room G.205 of the Alan Turing Building.

About Charlotte:
Charlotte Mégrourèche is a Research Associate on the Very Local Maths project. She comes from a background in mathematics teaching and conducts research in mathematics education. Her research interests focus on the potential continuities between mathematics and crafts, and on how making can engage mathematical thinking. Drawing on her experience across educational and creative settings, she is curious about how interdisciplinary approaches can broaden the scope of mathematical activity and open alternative ways of engaging with it. She is particularly drawn to questions of inclusion, and to the possibility of addressing them by reflecting on how mathematics is practiced, shared, and valued.

About the talk:
As a researcher in mathematics education, a question at the centre of my work is what gets to count as mathematics? I am particularly interested in documenting marginal mathematical practices and, from their singularity, questioning some of our habits in relation to how we make sense and imagine mathematical engagement in and outside of schools. In this presentation, I introduce a collaboration with a basket weaver who engages a distinctive form of mathematical practice through a weaving technique known as ‘cycloid looping’. I present some of her pieces in which she explores numerical patterns, curvature and topological questions through material experimentation. I use these examples to open questions about what mathematics can be and who we recognise as doing it.

MEET PROFESSOR DANIEL SHIU!
Daniel's talk "ML-KEM: The mathematics on which we are about to bet the Internet" is taking place at 2pm on Thursday 12th March in the Frank Adams room, Alan Turing Building.

About Daniel:
Daniel Shiu is Professor of Cryptography at the University of Manchester. Before academia, Daniel worked for GCHQ, the UK's intelligence, cyber and security agency for 20 years. He was the UK’s Head of Cryptographic Design and Quantum Information Processing, part of the initial National Technical Authority function assumed by the new National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC). In this role he was responsible for briefing the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser in cryptomathematical matters. Daniel also served as Head of the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research (HIMR), which is a linchpin of the government’s “Advanced Mathematics” strategy. Daniel also designs weekly puzzles for a national newspaper.

About the talk:
The Internet is about to make a big change as we try to deprecate our existing public key cryptography methods such as RSA and elliptic curves because they are vulnerable to attack by a moderately-sized quantum computer. In their place people are aiming to use a "module learning with errors" based approach called ML-KEM. In the talk I shall describe the mathematics behind ML-KEM and the computational problem that underpins it that we hope is hard to solve.
