Big balsam bash in Prestwich Clough, Saturday 30th May at 10:30am 👇

It is Bury Council’s balsam-bashing month and we are excited to get stuck in 🌱

Himalayan Balsam is a non-native plant species that spreads rapidly, outcompeting our native plants and causing erosion on our riverbanks.

We can tackle the spread by pulling, snapping and bashing these invasive plants before they flower later in summer.

You can take part in the balsam bash in Prestwich on Saturday 30 May at 10:30am - meet at St Mary’s Flower Park before heading into the Clough. Everyone welcome, no prior experience needed but bring some gloves!

This weekend, our Youth Branch have organised an orienteering trail in St Mary's Flower Park and Prestwich Clough (see map in comments).

You can take part any time between 12 noon on Saturday 23rd to 12 noon on bank holiday Monday 25th. There are 9 clue locations, and we think it might take up to an hour to get to them all and answer the questions (though this is just an estimate and you might well be quicker)

If you want to be in with a chance of winning a prize, just leave your contact details in the scoresheet. Otherwise you can take part just for fun.

When you're ready to take part, head to the Band Stand in St Mary's Flower Park (what3words: makes.petty.starts ) and you'll find some instructions for what to do and where to go. You'll need a smart phone to complete the scoresheet via QR code at the start point / each of the clue locations.

We hope you have fun. We'd love to see any photos of you doing the trail, just tag us 😍

Big thanks to Eric and Felix for organising this event from its inception 👏

We’re holding our next public meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 21 April at 7pm, virtually via Google Meet.

Come along to help us plan for our spring/summer events (Clough Day, a bat walk and nature activities for children are all in the works), hear about the launch of our new project on home energy efficiency, and chat about any other local environmental topics that are on your mind.

This meeting will only be 60 minutes so this virtual format can be a great way to get a flavour of what our volunteers do and how you can get involved.

Do you have knowledge or/or experience around Home Energy Efficiency? We're looking for individuals to join a sub group to help us develop our Home Energy Efficiency Project (HEEP for short!).

We were successful in obtaining a small pot of funding to work with adults who are not in education, employment or training (NEET), to develop a project around improving energy efficiency in the home. We will be looking to recruit NEET individuals to take part in the project later in the year, but for now we are looking for knowledgeable individuals to help us with the planning stage, recruiting individuals to the project & creating resources for those volunteers.

If this sounds like something that you would be interested in being involved in, please get in touch via email, with your name and mobile number, so we can add you to our HEEP Whatsapp chat - [email protected]

A couple of weeks ago, we did some post-winter tending at Warwick Street Green ❄️🪏🌞
We had some lovely donations of plants recently, so they are now in and getting established, and we did a whole lot of weeding! 🌱
Thank you so much for all the donations & green fingered volunteers. Keep your eyes peeled for some dates in Spring to come help out!

This afternoon our committee & volunteers enjoyed an afternoon trip to RHS Bridgewater, thanks to a successful grant application to Bury VCFA's Let's Value Volunteers Fund.

It was such a lovely afternoon with the sun shining & seeing the spring bulbs sprouting, followed by tea & cake in the café afterwards. The perfect way to say thank you to our hardworking & dedicated volunteers.
