Most people think Home-Start Manchester primarily supports families in crisis.

Sometimes we do. But more often, we support families who are doing their very best whilst carrying more than most people realise.

Parents who feel isolated. Parents lacking confidence. Parents without a support network around them. Parents who simply need somebody beside them.

A listening ear. A reassuring voice. A familiar face each week.

At Home-Start Manchester, our volunteers support families through some of the most important years of a child's life. The impact can be life-changing, not because volunteers have all the answers, but because they show up consistently with empathy, warmth and encouragement.

We're currently looking for new volunteers who can offer around 3 hours per week and commit to supporting a family for at least one year.

If you're passionate about giving back, building confidence in others and helping families feel less alone, we'd love to hear from you.

There’s a version of motherhood people celebrate publicly.

And then there’s the version many parents carry quietly behind closed doors.

The exhaustion.
The guilt.
The overstimulation.
The fear that everyone else is coping better.

At Home-Start Manchester, we work with families every day who are trying their absolute best whilst carrying far more than people realise.

Maternal Mental Health Week is an important reminder that struggling after having children is not uncommon, and it certainly isn’t failure.

In fact, many parents tell us the turning point was simply hearing somebody else say:
ā€œMe too.ā€

Because support changes things.

And nobody should feel like they have to navigate parenthood alone šŸ’œ

If you or somebody you know could do with some additional support or has the time to provide a family in Manchester with support, get in touch on our website šŸ’œ

We talk a lot about what ā€œgood parentingā€ should look like.

But the reality is… for most families, it’s not about getting everything right.

It’s about getting through the day.
It’s about showing up, even when it feels hard.
It’s about doing the best you can with what you’ve got.

And that’s exactly where support matters.

Because when parents feel supported, listened to, and less alone…
everything starts to shift.

Confidence grows.
Connection builds.
And children get the start in life they deserve.

That’s the impact of what we do, every single day across Manchester šŸ’œ

Good luck, Martin šŸ’œ

This Sunday, one of our Trustees is taking on a huge personal challenge… his first marathon in 10 years.

The last time Martin ran one, he didn’t have children. Life looks very different now, which makes this even more meaningful. It’s not just about the distance, it’s about showing what’s possible when something matters.

We’re incredibly proud of him.

And we’re grateful. Because every mile he runs helps more families across Manchester get the support they need in those early, often overwhelming years of parenthood.

If you’d like to support Martin, here's his JustGiving link šŸ‘‡

And if this has you thinking about challenges you'd like to get involved with, we are building a team of fitness fundraisers for May:

āž”ļø Half marathon
āž”ļø 10K
āž”ļø Or even a full marathon-length walk

There’s still time to get involved.

Not every challenge starts with confidence.

Sometimes it starts with a thought: ā€œCould I actually do that?ā€

A 10K.
A half marathon.
Even a full marathon walk.

This May, we’re building a Home-Start Manchester team of people willing to challenge themselves, not just for fitness… but for families across Manchester who need support in the earliest years of their child’s life.

Behind every step, there’s something bigger:
A parent who feels less alone.
A child who gets a stronger start.
A family that finally feels understood.

You don’t need to be an athlete.
You don’t need to have done it before.

You just need to be willing to try.
We’ll support you every step of the way.

If you’ve been thinking about taking on a challenge this year, this could be your reason to do it.

For some parents, a conversation with a Home Start volunteer isn’t just ā€œa chatā€.

It may be the only moment in the week where they feel heard.
Where they can pause.
Where someone sits with them, without judgement.

And that changes more than people realise.

Because when a parent feels supported, everything around them starts to shift.
Confidence builds.
Pressure eases.
And that shows up in how they show up for their child.

This is where it starts.
Not with big gestures.
With time. With presence. With a simple conversation.

That’s what Home-Start Manchester volunteers give.

And that’s how we help give Manchester’s children the start in life they deserve.

If you’ve got a few hours a week, empathy, and a passion for making an impact across Manchester - volunteering with Home Start Manchester could be a perfect fit for you.

Martin, one of our trustees, is running for Home-Start Manchester this year, and we’re building a team to join him.

Whether it’s the full marathon, 10K, half marathon, or even taking part in The Giant Walk - a marathon length walk, it all counts. Every mile really does make a difference.

Last year, we supported over 700 families across Manchester, with 86% of parents reporting improvements in their mental health.

That’s what this is about.
Being there at the right time.
Helping us to give families the support they need to cope, grow, and move forward.

You don’t need to be a seasoned runner to take part. You just need a reason to get involved.

We’ll support you throughout, and all runners will receive a package on the day, supported by local supplement company Warrior Supplements.

Join Martin and be part of something that creates real impact across Manchester.

For some parents in Manchester, a Home-Start visit isn’t just support.

It’s the only adult conversation they’ll have that week.

That one visit can help a parent feel less alone.
More confident.
More able to cope.

Our volunteers spend just a few hours each week supporting families with young children, often at a time when they need it most.

Last year, over 700 children across Manchester were supported through Home-Start.

Simple, consistent support can have a lasting impact on both a parent and a child’s life.

If you have around 3 hours a week and want to give something back, we’d love to hear from you.

Training and DBS checks are fully provided.

Apply directly at www.homestartmanchester.com to find out more.

There is no handbook for becoming a parent.
And sometimes the hardest part is not the sleepless nights. It is the doubt.

One mum recently shared what Home-Start Manchester meant to her.

Support with her mental health.
Someone there at the right time.
In the right place.
Without judgement.

She was reminded that she did not have to be the mum she thought she was expected to be.

She could be the mum she wanted to be.
That is what early support looks like.

Across Manchester, families are quietly carrying more than anyone realises. Sometimes what changes everything is not a big intervention. It is a consistent, caring presence.

If you are a parent who feels this might help, you are not alone.

And if you have a few hours a week and want to stand alongside a family when it matters most, this is the difference volunteers make.

Small moments.
Lasting impact.
