We're back with more Sustainable Development Goals chat 👀
Our work at the GMET aligns closely with 9 of the UN's Sustainability Development Goals, which is important because they are a roadmap for tackling inequality, poverty, climate change and habitat loss.
We reckon we match up with:
🤝 Goal 10 - Reduced inequalities: Targeting areas deprived of nature also targets areas that can suffer the most from a variety of inequalities, and a number of Green Spaces Fund projects are located in high IMD (Index of Multiple Deprivation) areas. This will help communities across the city region to have increasingly equitable access to green space and all the health and social benefits entailed.
🪴 Goal 11 - Sustainable cities and communities: Our Green Spaces Fund groups are growing fresh food in allotments, composting waste, reviving lost skills such as orchard maintenance, and helping to create a circular economy by trading tools, plants, goods, help and expertise with each other. Bringing people together within their own neighbourhoods is a key requirement for our funding as the spaces must be accessible for everyone to enjoy.
🌍 Goal 13 - Climate Action: Groups like Ardwick Climate are facing the issue head on. Their "Stepping Stones" project has created a nature-rich corridor of green spaces for the local community in an area that experiences high levels of air pollution. In total, that project improved 16,230m2 of green space - a huge win for both the community and the environment.
We've actually written a whole blog post about this topic, and how our work fits in with these SDGs. Read it here: https://gmet.org.uk/blog/annabelle-brittle/meeting-sustainable-development-goals
