Rethink Rebuild Society

Rethink Rebuild Society Our work began informally after the start of the Syrian uprising Syria in March 2011, and we were formally registered in May 2013.

RR is a Manchester-based charity that works towards improving the lives of refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants, in particular but not exclusively Syrians in the UK, helping them become positively established within British society. We are Rethink Rebuild Society (also known to our members as the British Syrian Community of Manchester), a Manchester-based charity and community organisation tha

On 20 April, our partners at Migrant Democracy Project are organising a mass lobby at Parliament in support of migrant voting rights.
Right now, there is a policy being debated that could change the course of migrant rights in the UK. Amendment NC29 in the Representation of the People Bill is calling for the extension of votings rights to include all migrant residents; a policy that would improve the political conditions for migrant communities and build a more just democracy for everyone.
This comes at a time when Commonwealth voting rights are a being threatened. It is time to DEFEND and EXTEND migrant voting rights in the UK.

On 23 March, our Charity Manager, Dr Haytham Alhamwi, delivered a guest lecture at the University of Manchester’s Sociology Department titled “Forced Migration and Conditions for Safe Return: The Syrian Case.” The session brought together students and academic staff to explore the complex realities of displacement, using Syria as a case study to better understand the dynamics of forced migration.
The lecture examined the root causes of displacement, highlighting how dictatorship, conflict, insecurity, and political instability drive migration. It also addressed the critical conditions required for safe, voluntary, and sustainable return, emphasising the importance of security, political stability, and social cohesion. The session provided valuable insights into one of the most pressing humanitarian challenges of our time, encouraging informed discussion and deeper understanding among attendees.

We recently partnered with Manchester City Council to deliver an Arab cultural awareness workshop for frontline staff.
Attended by over 20 employees, the session focused on building understanding of Arab communities, improving communication, and supporting more inclusive public services. Through interactive exercises and real-life scenarios, participants explored key themes such as family, respect, communication styles, and the role of religion in daily life.
The workshop highlighted how small, thoughtful changes in approach can strengthen trust, reduce misunderstandings, and improve engagement with diverse communities.

Rethink Rebuild Society was delighted to welcome members of the community to the Centre for two special evenings to open the fast together and take part in an important conversation about hate crime.
On Sunday 22 February, men from the community gathered, followed by a women’s session on Monday 23 February. Guests arrived from 5:00pm and broke their fast together at 5:30pm, before taking part in a dedicated talk and discussion on hate crime. The evening then continued with Ishaa and Taraweeh prayers, along with time for informal conversation, creating a warm, reflective and supportive atmosphere.
The sessions, delivered in Arabic, provided valuable insight into the nature and impact of hate crime, while highlighting the importance of reporting incidents and working together as a community. Participants engaged in meaningful discussions, shared experiences, and explored practical ways to strengthen resilience, solidarity and support within the community.
We are grateful to Manchester City Council for generously funding and supporting these events, helping to bring the community together to stand united against hate crime.

My name is Deniz Öztürk, and I am a researcher from Türkiye, currently a visiting researcher at the University of Edinburgh Business School, hosted by Prof. John Amis.

My project is titled “Inequalities in Refugee Workforce Integration: A Comparative Analysis of Syrians in Turkey, and Syrians and Ukrainians in the UK.” The study explores how Syrians experience work and employment in the UK, including the opportunities and challenges they face in building their careers and integrating into workplaces. In particular, it focuses on general work experiences, relationships with employers and local colleagues, and perceptions of reception by the host community.

I am currently conducting interviews with Syrian men and women who have work experience in the UK, preferably those who are currently working, in any sector or position. The interview can be conducted face to face or online, lasts approximately 45 minutes, and can be held in Arabic or English, with interpretation available if preferred. All interviews are strictly confidential, and no identifying information such as names or company details will be requested.

As a small token of appreciation for your time, participants will receive a £15 shopping voucher.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like further information.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Kind regards,
Deniz Öztürk
