This weekend saw the installation the amazing Folklorians Garden at Manchester and District Beekeepers Association in Heaton Park.

After winning gold for the garden at the BBC Gardeners World Live in Birmingham last month, designer, Kate Patrick was incredibly kind and chose to donate the garden to MDBKA to form part of our education and outreach programme. The garden was carefully moved, piece by piece, plant by plant from the NEC in Birmingham to Prestwich.

The garden will be used to educate about the importance of planting for pollinators and insects and other wildlife.

We are very honoured to be trusted as the custodians of this wonderful garden - a gift that will be enjoyed by beekeepers and park users for generations to come.

A huge thank you to Kate and her team, as well as the team at Heaton Park & Hall, and our very dedicated volunteers who have worked tirelessly, not just this weekend but for the past month, to make this garden a reality.

Happy World Bee Day 2026!

This World Bee Day - we encourage everyone to do what they can to support bees and pollinators.

- Plant a patch of pollinator friendly plants.
- Leave some of the grass in your garden long to provide food for pollinators.
- Reduce or eliminate pesticide/chemical use.

Busy session with our training group this evening.

Amongst everything else we had going on, some lovely runners let us know they had spotted a swarm of bees next to the Heaton Park & Hall Hall.

We managed to get them in a box and moved them to our apiary šŸ

Check out this great video from Manchester Honey Company - we have had these insects a lot closer to home than we would like in the last year, with confirmed sightings and nests in the North West in 2025! Keep an eye out and be sure to report any sightings.
