We’re pleased to share the latest Mary’s Meals Impact Report, highlighting the life-changing difference a daily school meal can make.

If you have any leftover foreign currency, you can also donate it using the envelopes at the back of the sanctuary.

All contributions will go directly to Mary’s Meals, helping to feed children in some of the world’s poorest communities.

Today marks two years since the death of Viraj Mendis, a lifelong activist and courageous defender of refugees, asylum seekers and the Tamil people.

In 1986, Viraj sought sanctuary at Ascension Churchwhile resisting deportation to Sri Lanka. For 760 days, this church became his home and the centre of a remarkable movement that brought together local residents, faith communities, trade unionists and campaigners in defence of his right to safety.

Although Viraj was forcibly removed from Ascension and deported in 1989, his commitment to justice never faltered. After settling in Bremen, he continued campaigning against deportation, persecution and human rights abuses for the rest of his life.

Viraj’s story remains woven into the fabric of Ascension and the history of Hulme. His courage challenges us to ensure that sanctuary is more than a memory. It must remain a living commitment to stand alongside people facing injustice today.

We remember Viraj with gratitude, affection and determination. His work is not finished, and neither is ours.

We enjoyed a picnic together, played cards, explored the gardens on a walk led by Rev Rebecca, and finished the day with ice cream. Even Clove the dog joined in the fun! 🐕
