Will you take action for a maximum working temperature?
Too hot to work? Heat Strike!
The Met Office has issued a Red Extreme Heat Warning for Wednesday and Thursday, with the historical UK temperature record for June set to be obliterated.
Which is why we are calling a Heat Strike on the hottest day of the year so far! Stay safe and, if you can, stay home and Heat Strike. We want to keep everyone safe at work, even if that means walking out.
In our Heat Strike flatpack you can find easy ways your workplace could adapt to the heat as well as a safety poster to print off.
Here are three simple ways to take part in the Heat Strike this week:
1. Lunchtime walk out - if work is putting you in imminent danger, you have the right to walk out under “Section 44” health and safety legislation. But you can still show your support even if you’re safe by walking out at lunch time with a Heat Strike placard or banner with colleagues to share on social media with .uk.
2. Set up a cool station - hand out water and safety advice to help your community and invite them to join Heat Strike. Set up a shady gazebo outside a busy station, local warehouse or office block.
3. Take your workplace’s temperature - snap a pic of a thermometer at work & share it on social media with .uk to demand a maximum workplace temperature now!
Whatever you manage we’d love you to send us your photos so we can share them too.
The temperature is rising and so are we!
Over the past three summers we’ve built the relationships we were told would never work, creating solidarity between trade unionists and climate activists. From the TUC unanimous passing of a Heat Strike motion in 2024, Cool Stations across the country in 2025, and Section 44 training at union conferences.
When it hit 35°C in May we heard union and party leaders call for change. The pressure is building on the Government. This week is our chance as a coalition to win a campaign the Bakers Union have been working towards for over a decade.
Can you or your organisation support us this week?
Share the call out on social media and in big group chats.
Ask your members to take part via your mailing list or other platforms.
Chip in to help Heat Strike be ready to respond for the rest of this summer.
Extreme heat is going to keep happening, and the climate crisis will increasingly impact workers. But we are cooler together. Let's use this summer of heat to fight for better conditions now and a safer future for workers.
P.S. Section 44 of the Employment Rights Act 1996 provides employees protection from detriment (i.e. dismissal, disciplinary or a pay cut) if they withdraw from and to refuse to return to a workplace that is unsafe and in their opinion represents a real risk of ‘serious and imminent danger’ which they could not be expected to avert. This is true for any employee in the UK but union members can access more support or advice in exercising this right.
