Open water swimming has gained popularity over the last few years. If this is something you want to try, we strongly advise joining a club with experienced members who will provide their expertise to keep you safe. With the recent hot weather, there is the temptation to cool off in rivers and flooded quarries. Please heed the safety warnings! Quarries, especially, have steep sides and the water is often very deep and much colder than you would expect. If you get into trouble, being able to get out of the water can be much harder than you think.
As well as hidden, underwater hazards, please donāt underestimate cold water. Jumping in to cold water initiates a gasp response, even if you are strong swimmer, you can drown in seconds. It also affects your heart rate and metabolism. Cold incapacitation can occur in a very short space of time. The combination of poor circulation, poor co-ordination and loss of motor skills makes grasping a rescue line, swimming or climbing out impossible.
Whilst MARS volunteers have received training in river rescue, we all agree, that prevention is better than cure!
