A Virtuous Woman returns in a new exhibition at the Old Parish Hall, Malton, alongside a series of new works responding to the controversy surrounding the piece and exploring cancel culture, participation in a polarised political climate and freedom of creative expression.

Originally created for Hardwick Hall as part of a practice-based PhD with the University of Leeds, A Virtuous Woman is a monumental textile work inspired by the 16th century Ancient Noblewomen embroideries commissioned by Bess of Hardwick. Made from recycled fabrics and created at the same scale as the Elizabethan originals, the work reimagines one lost embroidery from the historic series.

Throughout 2024, thousands of visitors contributed embroidered names, virtues, and values they felt should be recognised today, transforming the piece into a collective portrait of contemporary belief and debate. Following protests, activism, media attention and public controversy in 2025, the work was removed from display at Hardwick Hall.

Open daily 10am–4pm, Fri 5 June – Thurs 18 June 2026
(closed Mondays and Tuesdays)

Old Parish Hall, Spital St, Malton

Content warning: This exhibition includes material relating to public controversy and contested responses to the work, including content some visitors may find upsetting or offensive.

After a year away…
the ghosts return this Christmas. 👻❄️

We are beyond excited to announce the return of our immersive promenade production of Charles Dickens’ beloved classic, A Christmas Carol.

For a strictly limited run this December, audiences will once again journey through the historic buildings of Malton as the story unfolds around them.

Follow Scrooge through candlelit corridors, hidden rooms and unexpected encounters as past, present and future come to life in a truly unforgettable theatrical experience.

This is not a traditional seated performance.
You don’t just watch the story.
You step inside it.

Over the past four seasons, A Christmas Carol became one of our most loved productions — and after taking a year away in 2025, we cannot wait to bring it back.

🎟 Tickets are expected to go quickly and numbers are extremely limited due to the immersive nature of the production.

Book now and be part of the story this Christmas. Visit https://buytickets.at/beamazingarts/2229089 now!
