The ferry fiasco continues.
CalMac has confirmed there will be no ferry service between Mallaig and Armadale from 27 March to 11 April, right over the Easter holidays.
Do the Scottish Government have any idea what damage they’ve done to remote west coast communities by failing to commission replacement ferries? The Mallaig, Arisaig and South Sleat communities will be massively impacted, and the Easter holidays are crucial for local hospitality and retail businesses.
At the same time, businesses are already worried about delays to the recommencement of the Jacobite steam train, and I’m still waiting to hear back from Transport Minister Fiona Hyslop after writing about the aged ScotRail train serving Mallaig. I’m sure the ferry issue is sitting in her in-tray too. She’s due to step down in May, I can only assume she has clocked off already.
I’ve asked CalMac for an explanation for this disastrous redeployment. My constituents should not be left high and dry.
As Andrew Baxter has also said, connectivity in the West is essential - but our roads, rail services and ferries are all in a terrible state. With a £3.5 billion transport budget, it’s clear the Highlands are not getting their fair share.
