πŸš΄β€β™€ Friday fundraiser! πŸš΄β€β™€

On Wednesday 24th June, our Director of Care (Acting), Julie Hughes, will be taking on the Big Cycle Challenge organised by the AFPA Trust!

Over three days, Julie and a team of cyclists will ride from London to Amsterdam to raise vital funds for Alexander Devine Children's Hospice Service.

Here's why she's taking on this incredible challenge:

"I have been privileged to be a senior nurse at Alexander Devine for the past 12 years.

Every day I come to work I am inspired by the smiling faces of the children enjoying play, baking, hydrotherapy, music sessions and so much more. Our dedicated care team are able to offer respite in the home and at the hospice and we have the privilege of supporting families throughout their journey ensuring opportunities for memory making along the way.

We support children reaching end of life and following bereavement and we have a dedicated family support team offering parent/carer and sibling support. Whilst hospice care can be a fear for families it is truly amazing to see how much joy the hospice service brings to children and families facing so many difficult challenges.

As a service dependent on our fantastic supporters, we have a range of ways of seeking your support and I somehow got persuaded into taking on the Big Cycle Challenge! Fortunately I am a keen cyclist but it will be a challenge to pedal the distance from London to Amsterdam.

The challenge will mean so much to me knowing that any donation, however small, can make a difference to the service we deliver and to the smiling faces of the children that greet me when I come to work."

A very warm welcome to our new Chief Operations Officer, Tim Hebditch! πŸ‘‹

Tim joins us with 30 years of healthcare management experience and a passion for palliative care that has grown throughout his career.

"I have worked in managerial roles in healthcare for thirty years, across many sectors. My previous job as Operations Director for an Urgent Care provider involved close collaboration with two adult hospice services in London. This was my first exposure to this area of work, and I very quickly developed an interest. I was part of a team which developed an innovative and free-of-charge approach to out-of-hours prescribing, dispensing and delivery for end-of-life medications, and I co-presented this as part of the Marie Curie ICB Webinar Series last year.

My growing interest led me to become a Trustee at The Rosemary Foundation, which is an adult community palliative care service in south-east Hampshire. In terms of my career development, the opportunity to become the COO at Alexander Devine, arose at exactly the right time. I am delighted to have been appointed in this role, and I have enjoyed an incredibly friendly and welcoming first week in post."

As Chief Operating Officer, Tim will oversee the day-to-day operations of our children's hospice service, ensuring excellence in governance and compliance across all non-clinical areas of the organisation.

We're thrilled to have Tim on board and can't wait to see the impact he'll make as part of the Alexander Devine team.

Coming together for Henry! 🏐 πŸ’™

A huge thank you to Laurie, mum to one of our supported children, Henry, for organising a fantastic netball tournament in support of our local children’s hospice service.

On 16th May, 18 teams came together for a day of netball and fundraising, including our very own Alexander Devine team.

Thanks to the incredible support of everyone involved, and generous match funding from Invesco Cares, the event raised an amazing Β£7,035.

Laurie shared:

"As a family supported by Alexander Devine, the tournament meant a great deal to us. The charity has provided incredible support to our son Henry and our family, so seeing so many people come together to support their work was genuinely moving. Thank you to everyone who played, volunteered, umpired, donated and helped make the event such a success."

πŸ‘‰ Swipe to see some photos of the wonderful projects our Gardening Club volunteers have been working on in recent months!

Together, they've:

🌳 Planted and staked 19 holly trees along our driveway.
🌸 Planted 4 crab apple trees.
🌱 Planted more than 70 shrubs.
🌾 Added over 160 perennials and ornamental grasses.
🚜 Spread 9 tonnes of compost.
πŸ’ͺ Moved 2 tonnes of topsoil to support new tree planting.
β˜• Enjoyed hundreds of cups of tea and coffee.
🍩 Eaten countless doughnuts!

And that's before we even mention all the watering, lawn mowing and day-to-day jobs they take care of throughout the year.

Their hard work helps make our hospice grounds a beautiful, welcoming place for the children and families we support, and we're so grateful for everything they do.

A bucket load of thanks! πŸ’™

We couldn't let pass without a special shoutout to our fantastic community fair volunteers and bucket collectors.

Not only do they raise vital funds for our local children's hospice, they're also the friendly faces helping to spread the word about Alexander Devine and connect with communities across Berkshire, South Bucks and the surrounding counties.

Whether they're braving the British weather, or dealing with unexpected gazebo-related challenges, they're always ready to give a warm welcome wherever they go!

If you spot our volunteers out and about this summer, be sure to say hello. πŸ‘‹

Moments from a lovely morning yesterday celebrating our amazing knitters! πŸ«– 🧁

We’re so lucky to have such passionate knitters and crafting volunteers who give their time and talent to help us to raise funds for our children's hospice service.

Guests enjoyed tea and cake, exchanged knitting tips, and had the chance to learn more about the difference their fundraising makes for children and families supported by Alexander Devine.

A special thank you to Maggie Nunn for joining us with her delicious homemade jams, which have raised over Β£14,000 for our hospice.
