The Landmark Trust

The Landmark Trust The Landmark Trust is a building preservation charity, founded by the late Sir John Smith and Lady Smith.
(2)

It was established to rescue historic and architecturally interesting buildings and their surroundings from neglect. Once restored, Landmarks are let as inspiring places to stay with the income generated supporting their ongoing maintenance to ensure that they will never again fall into decay. Each year we receive details of around 150 historic buildings in need of rescue, but our activity is limi

ted to around three or four projects a year by the resources of time and the money we can raise. Each restoration uses traditional craft skills and techniques.

Whether sitting in bed with your morning coffee or soaking in the bathtub after a long day’s walking, at The Ruin you’ll never be far from a spectacular view.

In fact, this playful little 18th-century folly was deliberately situated just so, dramatically perched above a steep wooded gorge deep within the wild and romantic Hackfall Gardens, in order to frame one of the finest vistas in North Yorkshire.

From the smooth Gothic frontage of this Georgian retreat, all seems politely proportioned and simple. But step around the back to discover a rugged, Romanesque, triple-domed ruin, with doors leading to three disconnected rooms.

Staying here puts you in direct and regular contact with the great outdoors, the only way to get between the rooms being to step outside into the open air, and take in the miles of Yorkshire countryside, woodland and waterfalls that roll out before you. At night, flitting between the two wings across a starlit terrace is an otherworldly experience.

There are walks from the doorstep, so bring your hiking boots to explore the surrounding landscape and villages, rich in country pubs and beautiful gardens.

The Ruin sleeps two, and has good availability over the summer months. Seek it out at our website to read more and book your stay.

Could you lead the next chapter of the Landmark Trust as our new Director?

Dr Anna Keay will step down from her role in October, after 14 transformational years leading the charity. This follows confirmation by The Royal Household that Anna has been appointed to write the official authorised biography of The late Queen Elizabeth II, commissioned by His Majesty The King.

We now seek a new Director to lead the Trust through its next phase, safeguarding its character, culture and reputation while ensuring that it remains bold, ambitious and financially resilient.

Working in close partnership with the Chair and Board, the Director will provide emphatic leadership, set strategic direction, oversee a complex operational and hospitality business, and champion Landmark’s fundraising and advocacy.

The role calls for a rare combination of heritage sensitivity and business acumen, alongside the ability to inspire a committed workforce, communicate with warmth and authority, and care deeply for the values and culture that make Landmark unique.

To read the Appointment Brief and apply for the role, visit the jobs page on our website: https://brnw.ch/21x3eiU

Closing date: 10 July

Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to The Landmark Trust on this appointment. If you have questions about the role, please email [email protected].

This tiny railway cottage in the heart of the Eryri National Park is so remote that it can’t be reached by car. Instead, you’ll need to hike for ten minutes up a footpath or, if you time it right, catch the small mountain steam train that passes its door.

However you arrive here, once you do you’ll feel the weight of the world (and the weight of your backpack) fall away - especially when you pour that first cup of tea and look out on this sublime Welsh landscape.

The cottage’s name is Coed y Bleiddiau, or ‘Wood of the Wolves’, named for the last wolf in Wales which is said to have killed on these slopes. There may no longer be wolves roaming these valleys and woods, but you might see nightjars, goshawks or even ospreys - not to mention plenty of Welsh mountain goats.

The trainline which the cottage was built to serve back in 1863 is the scenic Ffestiniog Railway - snaking between Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog a couple of times a day. The railway fell out of use during WWII but was triumphantly restored by volunteers and enthusiasts in more recent times. Staying here during the spring and summer months, you’ll get free travel on the railway, hopping on and off from your own private platform as the train chugs past your door.

Coed y Bleiddiau sleeps 4 and has plenty of availability for summer adventures between July and September. Head to our website to read more and book your stay.

Today we’re celebrating Arts & Crafts pioneer Charles Voysey, born on this day in 1857.

Called ‘an architect of individuality’, Voysey filled his designs with his signature heart motifs to symbolise warmth, hope and affection. And nowhere are these values better embodied than at Winsford Cottage Hospital in the heart of Devon, designed in 1900 to a meticulous plan centred around the wellbeing of its inhabitants.

Surrounded by green rolling hills and restorative country air, this progressive building was always intended as a peaceful sanctuary for rest and recuperation. Wards for men and women faced the sunny, south-facing garden, and the children’s ward had a view of the steam trains passing the nearby railway junction - now a nature reserve.

After serving its Devon community for most of the 20th century, before then falling into disuse, Voysey’s hospital was lovingly restored in 2018 to the tranquillity and elegance of his original vision. It’s now a welcoming retreat for six guests, set deep in the lush Devon countryside.

Inside, you’ll find a building full of light and air, with Arts & Crafts detailing, green glazed tiles and a golden mosaic floor. Its setting offers the best of all worlds: a village pub and store are just a short walk away, while the north Devon coast and Dartmoor are within a 30-minute drive.

To read more about Charles Voysey, and to experience his architectural vision of wellness for yourself this summer, find Winsford Cottage Hospital on our website or via the link below.

We don’t always need to travel to faraway lands to find summer magic. Often, the most unexpected surprises can be uncovered far closer to home. At places like Luttrell’s Tower, a Georgian folly on the shores of the Solent with sea views and its own secret tunnel down to the beach, thought to have once been used by smugglers.

With soaring ceilings, rooftop terraces, sweeping spiral stairs and its own private beach access, Luttrell’s Tower is the kind of place you won’t forget in a hurry.

It sleeps four in two beautiful bedrooms, and still has some availability for stays this July and August.

Thanks to Katie Pankowsi for these snapshots of a magical summer stay at Luttrell’s.

To spend a few days and nights at Gothic Temple is to live for a while as though in a painting.

This dramatic folly crowns a grassy hill within one of the world’s most famous gardens, in a landscape dreamed up by Capability Brown himself during his time as Head Gardener here.

Staying here, at the heart of this famous 18th-century vision (now looked after by the ) you’ll experience the changing light and the wonder of the world he so thoughtfully created.

Inside the temple, the rooms are all circular, with the main vault of the central space brightly painted with heraldry. The two bedrooms, kitchen and bathroom are squeezed into the turrets, while the sitting room occupies the main space, which soars up to the gilded dome above. There are views of monuments, lakes and temples through every Gothic window – all yours to explore at any time, but most thrillingly after the park has closed to day visitors, when you can have this extraordinarily romantic landscape all to yourself.

Gothic Temple is available to book this sunny bank holiday weekend, as well as throughout the summer. Head to our website to read more and secure your dates for a truly one-of-a-kind stay.

A bright new chapter has begun at Tixall Gatehouse.

This striking Staffordshire Landmark with links to Mary Queen of Scots has been one of our most popular properties for more than 40 years. Having been originally rescued and restored in the 1970s, we thought it was about time for some internal upgrades, so last year we began work to improve the gatehouse’s layout, comfort and energy efficiency.

For the past 12 months or so we’ve been working hard to transform Tixall into a plush 21st century retreat while preserving its bountiful historic charm.

We’ve installed five deep boreholes for ground source energy and underfloor heating, and improved draughtproofing and insulation throughout.

The previously empty and unheated top floor now features a spacious new open-plan living area and kitchen (look out for the fascinating Peak District fossiliferous limestone worktop) as well as a large new en-suite bedroom - all with far-reaching views over the Staffordshire countryside.

Now this 500-year-old building is ready for whatever the next century holds and, with availability from June onwards, you can be among the first to experience its bright new era.

Head to our website to read more about Tixall Gatehouse and book your stay.
