We were very pleased with the wonderful performance by the Wihan Quartet in their concert at Norden Farm last month.

This Thursday April 16th we welcome the Echo Vocal Ensemble who are an adventurous group of British singers known for their flexibility, innovation and excellence. Their concert ‘The Sun has Burst the Sky’ explores how choral music has conveyed 'light' over five centuries.

Featuring music spanning five centuries, from Tallis, Monteverdi and Rheinberger to the present day. Echo Vocal Ensemble is led by the brilliant conductor Sarah Latto, who has also conducted local choirs in Berkshire. The group has a reputation for imaginative programming and multi-disciplinary collaborations.

We look forward to being 'enlightened' by this wonderful young ensemble! [Sorry]. Do come and join us, this Thursday 16th November, 19:45, Norden Farm Centre for the Arts. More info and a link to book, here: https://www.maidenheadmusicsociety.org/echo-vocal-ensemble

In our two most recent MMS concerts we were treated to fantastic performances from two young ensembles:
First, Lumas Winds in November gave us some fascinating and varied repertoire (opening with a piece combining music with spoken word, 'Opus Number Zoo' by Berio - multi-talented as they are!)
Then in January, for our members, our annual 'Rising Stars' concert in the beautiful surroundings of Lea Barn at Cookham: a wonderful performance by the up & coming Scintilla quartet, currently students at the Royal Academy of Music, who paired Mozart’s intense Adagio and Fugue in C minor with Ravel’s String Quartet in F major (what a thrilling pizzicato 2nd movement!).
We very much hope to hear both these inspirational ensembles again in the near future.

Now looking forward to our next concert on Tues 17 Feb 7:45pm at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts , with Peter Mallinson on viola, Shirley Turner on violin and Richard Pearce on piano, all associated with top orchestras/groups such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment . . . Their programme will fuse a variety of composers and styles including Mendelssohn (Trio in C minor), Harry Waldo Warner, Julia Simpson and Mel Bonis, about whom Saint-Saen’s pronounced, “I never imagined a woman could write such music!”. Do come and hear what he was talking about😊, we look forward to seeing you there!

Hugely looking forward to seeing this young British wind quintet THIS THURSDAY EVENING at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts, 7:45pm.

This prize-winning ensemble have performed at the Wigmore Hall and released their first album in the summer of 2024. Described as "One to watch" by BBC Radio 3, they are committed ambassadors for wind chamber music and the rich variety of repertoire it offers.

If you know a young person learning a wind or brass instrument, do please bring them along - under 18s are free with an accompanying adult. This is a marvellous opportunity to hear top quality performances on flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and french horn and, as at most MMS concerts, enjoy the opportunity to chat face to face with the artists afterwards.

Do come along and support this lively young ensemble. We look forward to seeing you there!

We had a stirring start to our 2025-2026 concert season with a typically exuberant performance by the fiery baroque group Red Priest who presented works by Bach, Vivaldi, Telemann and Handel in their inimitable style.

Our next concert sees the return of the pianist Piers Lane to Norden Farm Centre for the Arts , with one of Schubert’s most thrillingly virtuosic late piano sonatas, Sonata in D major D850. Also on the programme is the complete selection of Chopin pieces used for the ballet Les Sylphides. A compendium of the Polish composer-pianist’s greatest work, it includes a polonaise, several mazurkas, two nocturnes, the Tarantelle, a prelude and several waltzes.

Tickets: £22; MMS Members £17; Under 18s free, up to 2 with a paying adult, available at: https://norden.farm/events/piers-lane/2025-10-29/19:45/add_to_basket

The next concert of our season will be given by Ceruleo on Thursday 10th April at 7:45pm at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts in Maidenhead.

Ceruleo will be bringing to life the music of the extraordinary composer Barbara Strozzi with two singers and three instrumentalists, combining a selection of her finest works with instrumental pieces by her contemporaries.

Barbara Strozzi was both a performer and composer in seventeenth-century Venice and became the most published composer of secular song of her time. Her distinctive style is characterised by virtuosic vocal lines and a dramatic approach to text setting.

Formed in 2014 at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Ceruleo create dramatic programmes using spoken text alongside music for two sopranos and continuo. Every member of the group performs as a soloist, and they use all available combinations of instruments and voices to create innovative and captivating performances. They specialise in the music of Restoration England and Seventeenth Century Italy. Do come along on Thursday evening to learn more - there is usually the chance to chat with the performers after each of our concerts!
