On Sunday 17th May 2026, people from every corner of Lough Neagh stood shoulder to shoulder with the wider public to demand action over the slow destruction of the most important freshwater supply in Ireland.
For decades, untreated sewage, slurry and pollution have been allowed to pour into the Lough while government departments looked the other way. Now the public are being warned about toxic algae blooms, contaminated water and the growing health risks linked to this environmental disaster.
At the meeting, serious concerns were raised following findings from Queen's University Belfast which identified dangerous pathogens in the Lough, including strains showing resistance to multiple antibiotics. That should send shockwaves through every household in Northern Ireland.
This is no longer just an environmental issue. It is a public health emergency.
Meanwhile, Minister Muir continues to hand out millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money to headline-grabbing schemes and photo opportunities while the poison still flows into the Lough every single day. Fancy announcements, smiling photographs and cheap bow ties will not clean the water, protect public health or restore a dying ecosystem.
The people have had enough.
Enough excuses. Enough delays. Enough political theatre.
The communities around Lough Neagh are demanding real action: Stop the dumping. Upgrade the sewage infrastructure. Support proven solutions. Protect our drinking water before it is too late , if it isn't already .
Because once a freshwater ecosystem collapses, no government press release will bring it back.
