The Council, in partnership with STEP, is recognising 2026 across with a week-long programme of community events, cultural activities and Simple Acts of kindness and courage designed to bring people together.

Taking place from 15–21 June, Refugee Week is the world’s largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary.

This year’s theme is Courage β€” recognising the everyday courage shown by people rebuilding their lives in new communities, while encouraging all of us to show courage through welcome, connection and compassion.

Throughout the week, STEP and the Council are inviting individuals, community groups, schools, businesses and organisations across Mid Ulster to take part in the Refugee Week 'Simple Acts' campaign β€” encouraging small everyday actions that help build understanding and belonging.

UNITED AGAINST RACISM STATEMENT ON MAGHERAFELT HATE CRIME

United Against Racism unequivocally condemns the attack on Castledawson Rd. This is a cowardly and absolutely appalling attempt to intimidate and terrorise individuals within their own community. It deserves unreserved condemnation. United Against Racism calls on all political and community representatives in Mid Ulster to show leadership, stand with the victims, and make it absolutely clear that such hatred will never be tolerated.

We know from the overwhelming support often shown by local people that these hateful actions do not represent the majority in Magherafelt or the wider Mid Ulster community, and Mid Ulster will continue to be a welcoming place to all, and stand against hatred like this.

UAR statement on the racist attack that took place last night.

Press Statement For Immediate Use

The local campaign group United Against Racism ( UAR) have condemned the threatening graffiti daubed on the house of a Sudanese family in the Fountain Estate in Derry.

Spokesperson Karen McCole believes that the attack on the family is not representative of the area or the city:

β€œ I have had the pleasure of meeting this family, they are fantastic people who give all they can back to the community.

There is no way that those responsible for this attack are acting in a way that represents the people of the Fountain.

Derry is a place where people are welcomed no matter where they are from .

United Against Racism send their love and solidarity to the victims of this racist attack.

While politicians try to scapegoat asylum seekers and migrants we must redouble our efforts to fight racist scaremongering, lies and misinformation.

We are one community regardless of creed or colour.

We will always look out for our neighbours. β€œ
