Maesteg Community First and Welfare Responders Emergency - Call 999
Non-Emergency - Call 111

Welsh Ambulance Community Welfare and Community First Responders

When a patient faces a serious emergency, every second counts for them and a simple helping hand from a Community First Responder can make a vital difference to their lives. First Responders in Wales are volunteers who donate their spare time to attend appropriate 999 calls and provide first hand emergency care to people in their own community. When a 999 call is made, First Responders are alerted

by WAST‘s three control centres and are sent to 700+ certain types of calls the same time as an ambulance so they can provide essential care until the vehicle reaches the scene. Our volunteers are trained by the Welsh Ambulance Service to administer basic first aid skills, oxygen therapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of a defibrillator.

‼️PLEASE SHARE ‼️

We are continuing to experience significant pressure across our hospital sites which is having an impact on the Emergency Departments within Princess of Wales, Prince Charles and Royal Glamorgan Hospitals.

We are urging the public to please only attend the Emergency Department in an emergency and to consider other healthcare options available to you. Some examples of a medical emergency include:

• Unconsciousness
• Difficulty in breathing
• Suspected heart attack
• Serious injury or heavy blood loss
• Sudden weakness or speech problems

If you have a minor injury, such as minor burns, minor wounds, minor limb injuries, minor head and neck injuries, you can visit our Minor Injuries Units at Ysbyty Cwm Cynon or Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda.

If your condition is urgent, but not life-threatening, you can also:

• Visit the NHS 111 Wales website for advice on your condition and the next steps to take
• Contact a member of the Primary Care team in the community such as your GP, dentist, optometrist or pharmacy
• Call 111 to access urgent advice and guidance and the Out of Hours service

We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

‼️PLEASE SHARE‼️

We are experiencing significant pressure across all of our hospital sites today, in particular the Princess of Wales.

This pressure is having an impact on our Emergency Departments and will likely continue into the weekend, resulting in long waits to be seen as we try to treat those who need us most urgently.

We are urging the public to only attend in an emergency, and we ask for your patience and understanding during this challenging time.

If you do need to attend our Emergency Departments, please be patient and treat our staff members with respect.

Here are a few things that you can do, to work with us and not against us, this weekend:

• If you have an urgent condition, but it is not an emergency, please call 111 to access advice and the out-of-hours service

•If you are unsure of your condition, please visit the NHS 111 Wales website to check your symptoms and get advice and guidance on your healthcare needs. https://111.wales.nhs.uk/

•If you do need to attend the department, please treat our colleagues with respect

We thank you for your ongoing support and patience during this challenging time.
