Lovely report from chris hall of cambrian ecology of the biodiversity on our site pre and post the works done this year.
Here are some excerpts since i cant figure out how to attach a pdf!! 😅

"In conclusion, the new pond is a great asset to biodiversity by providing a breeding site for amphibians and a resource for invertebrates such as dragonflies which require aquatic habitats for breeding. The plants selected also provide nectar sources for a range of invertebrate taxa. Water is also essential for birds and mammals during dry weather."

"A dead hedge, also known as a dead fence, has been constructed to segregate the wildlife area from disturbance by visitors. This type of structure carries enormous benefits to biodiversity"

"Prior to the works taking place, nesting potential was limited to within the dense vegetation. This facility will still be available once the newly planted/sown vegetation becomes established and matures.
Additional nesting facilities have now been provided in the form of a range of nest boxes which cater for a range of different bird species.
Hole nesting species such as blue t**s; (Cyanistes caeruleus) are catered for with standard nest boxes and open fronted nest boxes will provide nesting opportunities for species such as spotted flycatcher; (Muscicapa striata). This later species is a ‘Priority Species’ listed under Section 7 of the Environment Wales Act and is ‘Red Listed’ by RSPB due to the decline in the UK breeding population."

"With the excavation of the pond, the site now has the potential to support a range of amphibians including the great crested newt; (Triturus cristatus) which is known to be present in area from the results of the data search. This is a European Protected Species, (EPS) and is also listed as a ‘Priority Species’ under Section 7 of the Environment Wales Act."

"There are now composting facilities on the site. This facility is extremely valuable to grass snakes; (Natrix helvetica) which use the warmth generated by decomposition to incubate their eggs. The grass snake is also a ‘Priority Species’.
The increase in the invertebrate population as a result of the works carried out also has the potential to be beneficial to hedgehogs; (Erinaceous europaeus). The hedgehog is another ‘Priority Species’. "

We are honoured to host the wildlife that is present at the allorment and hope to welcome more species to our site next year.
