We step into September with three of our osprey family still with us, Idris, Llinau and Elsi. This has only happened three times before. We are sure Idris will be counting down the days as the draw south increases.

Idris and Llinau are also still here, but spending less and less time around the nest.

In the last two days, we have identified three different ringed intruders at the nest. All three are young males (2-4 years old), and all have been seen here earlier in the season.

It is likely these birds have been touring Wales and perhaps the wider UK, all summer, plotting a map of nest sites.

This is time very well spent, as it could give them the advantage in the future when they are looking for a nest of their own. It is a good indicator of a healthy population in years to come.

Llinau in full mantling mode after an unfamiliar osprey drifted near the nest today.

Unfortunately it didn't come close enough for us to get an I.D. (can you blame it...?!)

She might still be young, but her defence game is 10/10. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

As the osprey season winds down, weโ€™ve put together a short video highlighting one of the most exciting afternoons at the Observatory this summer.

Telyn and Idris brought in five fish in just over an hour - and because all the action happened close to the Obs, it was an absolute treat for staff, volunteers, and visitors alike!

Long-standing volunteer Jill, who has been with us since 2014, even called it the best afternoon sheโ€™s ever experienced here (so far!) ๐Ÿฆ…๐ŸŸ

The record at this nest of ringed intruders recorded in one season is 11 - and weโ€™ve been stuck on 11 for three months.

Until today.

Say hello to ๐๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ž ๐Ÿ—๐‹๐Ÿ– - he is a fledgling from this summer from a private nest in the Dyfi Valley, the eldest of two offspring in that clutch.

So today we have our elusive No12 intruder - a new record.
