Founded in 1860 Macduff lifeboat station has had several names and locations but since 1975 the station has been in Macduff. We are unique in the RNLI being the only station to launch their inshore lifeboat by using a mobile crane. While our usual launch location is Macduff harbour, we can if needed drive our crane to any of the small harbours along the coast and launch from there. We have a shop on site at the station which is open 2-4pm on Wednesdays & Saturdays from May to December.

20-year fundraising medal for RNLI Macduff volunteer, Anne Lindsay.

Anne Lindsay has been a regular face at our fundraising events, from working in our shop to helping with coffee mornings and selling gifts at the many events we get invited to.

On Wednesday evening, Anne was presented with her 20-year service medal at the station.

Lifeboat Operations Manager, Nigel Ironside, said, 'On behalf of the crew and all the volunteers here at RNLI Macduff, I would like to offer our sincere congratulations and a huge thank you to Anne for her over 20 years of fundraising at Macduff.

Every penny & pound that is raised by our dedicated fundraising volunteers goes towards helping us save lives at sea here in Macduff, and we can't thank them enough for all they do.

The lifeboat station isn't just about the boat and the crew, it is a whole team of people who work together to ensure that we are ready for service when we are called upon.'

RNLI lifeboats from 46 stations around the coast of Scotland launched 1182 times, saving 36 lives*. One of those lives saved was Chris who was rescued by Macduff RNLI after he was caught up in a rip current in the Moray Firth.

‘I'd gone under at least twice and knew I was close to death, then I saw the helicopter, then the Macduff team searching for me, I knew if I could hang on I'd probably be OK.

A couple of minutes later I was pulled on the boat and the guys set about keeping me alive.’

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) has today released its rescue figures for 2024, which show the charity’s lifeboats in Scotland saved twice as many people than in 2023.

The Met Office has issued red, yellow and amber weather warnings for wind and rain this Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Strong winds are expected throughout Scotland on Friday, with gusts reaching 80mph across the central belt and more extreme gusts set to peak around 90mph in exposed locations such as island and coastal areas.

While we don't expect to see a red warning here on the coast around Macduff, during Friday and into Saturday, there is likely to be very strong west to southwesterly winds, with peak gusts of 60-70 mph fairly widely inland, 70-80 mph in some areas, and 80-90 mph along more exposed coastal areas.

For those who plan to visit the coast during this time, the strong gusts pose a significant risk to safety and the lifesaving charity is urging the public to exercise extreme caution, particularly along exposed cliffs, seafronts and piers.

RNLI Water Safety Lead for Scotland, Michael Avril, said: ‘Storm Éowyn is set to bring potentially dangerous and uncertain conditions so we’re asking the public to stay vigilant.

‘The RNLI advises that you stay away from the water as conditions could knock you off your feet or wash you into the sea. It is not worth risking your life.

'If you find yourself in trouble unexpectedly in the water, remember to Float to Live; lie back in the water, extend your arms and legs and try to relax as best as you can until you get control of your breathing.

‘If you see someone else in danger in the water, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. If you have something that floats that they can hold on to, throw it to them. Don’t go in the water yourself – you could end up in difficulty too.’

The RNLI's safety advice is:

Stay well back from stormy, wintry seas and cliff edges
Check the weather forecast and tide times before you go
Take a phone with you
In an emergency, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard

We are likely to miss the worst of here in the North East of Scotland, but the message is the same, please stay safe.

We are urging the public to exercise caution, particularly along exposed cliffs, seafronts and piers.

It doesn't matter if it is a named storm or not. A strong gust of wind or a rouge wave along the coast can easily catch you out.

and stay safe.

This weekend, the UK and Ireland will be hit by Storm Darragh and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is asking those near the coast to be aware of the dangers the stormy weather will bring.
