Save the date for Prestbury Summer Fair!

It’s back! Join us on Sunday 28th June 2026, 2pm–6pm, in the heart of Prestbury village for a brilliant summer afternoon.

In collaboration with the wonderful Independent Street, this year’s fair will bring together artisan market stalls, a children’s fun fair, food and drink, live entertainment, Punch & Judy, local businesses and community groups.

We’re also pleased to be there supporting the day, offering information and advice for people with visual impairments.

It’s always a lovely community event and a great excuse to get together, so pop it in your diary as you won’t want to miss it.

See you then!

June is Cataract Awareness Month.

Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions in the UK and a leading cause of vision loss, particularly as we get older. In fact, cataract surgery is one of the most frequently performed procedures on the NHS, with hundreds of thousands carried out each year.

They develop when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, which can make vision look blurry, hazy or like you’re looking through frosted glass. Over time, this clouding can make everyday tasks like reading, driving or recognising faces more difficult.

The good news is cataracts usually develop slowly and can often be treated successfully with surgery, especially when picked up early through regular eye checks.

If you’ve noticed changes in your vision, it’s worth getting it checked.

East Cheshire Eye Society has put together a sight loss awareness guide explaining different eye conditions and how they can affect people’s vision. You can download the free booklet here: https://monkeylink.co/e16057

Healthwatch Cheshire is currently working in partnership with Cheshire East to gather feedback on NHS Health Checks - https://tinyurl.com/2954pser - to improve awareness, access, and overall experience.

NHS Health Checks are a free service for people aged 40–74 without certain long-term conditions, helping to assess the risk of issues such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes through simple tests and a short lifestyle discussion.

The survey explores awareness, experiences, barriers to attending, preferred locations, and the support people would find helpful afterwards.

Anyone who is aged 40-74 and a Cheshire East resident can complete a survey (click the link below).

Your feedback will help shape how the service is delivered locally. The survey is quick to complete, anonymous unless you choose otherwise, and closes on 25 June 2026.

Please take a few minutes to take our survey.

Could you help shape the future of a local charity?

East Cheshire Eye Society is looking for a Treasurer Trustee to join our Board and help support the vital work we do for people living with sight loss across East Cheshire.

We're seeking someone with the knowledge and enthusiasm to take a lead role in overseeing our financial strategy and management. As a Trustee, you'll help ensure the charity remains financially sound, legally compliant and well-positioned to continue supporting local people for years to come.

This is an opportunity to use your skills, experience and ideas to make a genuine difference.

Board meetings take place monthly (mostly remotely) and we're keen to hear from people who are passionate about improving the quality of life of those with a visual impairment. Experience of sight loss isn't required, and we welcome applications from people with a broad range of backgrounds and experiences.

Interested in finding out more? Contact us at [email protected] or call 01625 422602.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Eye Health and Visual Impairment is running a survey on accessible digital eye care and the NHS App. This is open to blind and partially sighted people, clinicians, accessibility specialists, advocacy groups and NHS policymakers.

The survey will take around 10 minutes to complete, and can be accessed from the link below.

It is open until 5pm on Friday 3 July 2026.

Your input will help inform the APPG’s understanding of how digital care services can be made more accessible for blind and visually impaired people, and inform a short APPG position summary, setting out clear, actionable recommendations.

The survey is hosted on Microsoft Forms, which is designed to be accessible. However, if you would prefer to receive the survey in a Word document format, they would be happy to provide this on request. If you require the survey in a different format, or have any questions about the call for evidence, please contact the APPG Secretariat at [email protected]

Please share with others who may be interested.

What comes after retirement?

For some people, it’s the perfect time to use their experience in a different way.

East Cheshire Eye Society is looking for people interested in Trustee and volunteer opportunities, helping support local people living with sight loss across East Cheshire.

It’s a chance to stay active, connected and involved in something that makes a real difference locally.

If your workplace supports employees approaching retirement or lifestyle changes, we’d love to start a conversation.

To find out more, contact us at [email protected] or call 01625 422602.
