Love The Forest

Love The Forest Managed by the New Forest Trust (Reg charity no 1099420) to help secure the future of the New Forest

The New Forest Trust was formed in 2003 with one simple aim- to secure the wellbeing of The New Forest for those who live in it and for those who love it, now and in the future. The New Forest Trust supports activities and organisations who strive to conserve the flora, fauna and commoning practices of this special area. The Trust aims to raise money which helps in practical ways; helping to impro

ve the public’s understanding of the essential relationship between conservation and the unique livestock, woodland and open forest husbandry methods employed by people who live and work in The New Forest.

It was a privilege for one of our trustees to spend a very sunny morning with 20+ young people with the Wild New Forest Wildlife Explorers today - we explored the heathland and holly holms, saw hawfinches and fungi, watched and learned about bird ringing, and found a rare lichen running spider and an adder, - all fuelled courtesy of New Forest Shortbread!

The Trust is delighted to support this fabulous initiative πŸƒπŸ€™

Yellow-legged hornet awareness

We have been contacted by the British Beekeepers' Association, who are supporting Defra and the National Bee Unit with their programme of eradication of the invasive species, the yellow-legged 'Asian' hornet.

The south and south east of England are particularly vulnerable to yellow-legged hornet incursions due to their proximity to northern France, where the insect is now established. Furthermore, large areas of land such as forests, national parks and AONBs, or areas close to access points for yellow-legged hornets, such as ports and ferry terminals, are at increased risk - so the New Forest has a bit of a perfect storm of circumstances for the hornets to get a foothold in the area!

We are sharing some new awareness materials created for the upcoming spring season - please have a look and share amongst your contacts.

One of the biggest challenges for the National Bee Unit last year was a record number of false reports, with tens of thousands of images of the wrong insect - mainly the European hornet - being reported to the Asian Hornet Watch app. Their goal for this year is to improve the public's awareness on how to correctly
identify and report yellow-legged 'Asian' hornets to help the authorities streamline the process and free up more time to respond to actual sightings.

Thank you !
