What's on in March?

On the first Wednesday afternoon, 4th March at 2.15 for 2.30 there is our monthly speaker meeting.

The Eighth Crewman

The Royal Air Force is well known for its outstanding qualities of determination, accuracy and innovation in times of conflict. During WW2 a small number of squadrons were tasked with specific roles; best known of these is probably 617 ‘Dam Busters’, but there were others, whose roles were so secret that they were unknown – even to each other. Lancaster bombers of 101 Squadron flew more missions than any other squadron in the RAF, against greater odds and suffered the highest number of losses, both of aircraft and men. This talk by Colin van Geffen is the story of one member of that squadron.

On the 2nd and 4th Wednesday mornings you can come along to our sociable coffee mornings from 10 am in the Solento Lounge on the High Street hill.

On Monday 16th March is our March TED talk and discussion at 10 am in the Community Centre Gates Hall. Come along for free coffee or tea followed by a short video and small group discussion.

How The Button Changed Fashion / Wearing Nothing New

Fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi mixes high fashion and the mass market, with a line of haute couture and a line for Target. Plus a talk show, a cabaret act, a movie, a new book.

Designer Jessi Arrington packed nothing for a TED conference but 7 pairs of un**es, buying the rest of her clothes in thrift stores around Los Angeles. It's a meditation on conscious consumption -- wrapped in a rainbow of colour and creativity..

Monday February 17th The fine art of fibbing

Comedian and writer Athena Kugblenu has a hot take: we’re all liars, and that’s OK. Exploring the line between the little lies that do no harm and the big, self-serving whoppers you’d best avoid, she offers a crucial question to ask yourself to help determine if honesty is the best policy — or if a fib might best fit the situation.

The August TED talk should be a good one for me, and maybe others who find themselves suggesting solutions to problems!

How to tame your advice monster

It lurks within, emerging in conversation to share ineffective, premature suggestions … it’s your advice monster, and we all have one, says writer and teacher Michael Bungay Stanier. He shares how giving advice can easily go astray, from solving the wrong problem to disempowering the very person you’re trying to help, and offers a simple question to help you stay curious, strengthen your relationships — and tame that monster.

Why not join us at the Fuller Hall at the Community Centre on Monday 18th August at 10am?

Future topics:
September 15th Why we need independent media
October 20th Why daylight is the secret to great sleep
