Important advice on inflatables from our water safety team on how to stay safe this summer.

📱Take with you a means of calling for help
🛟 Wear a personal buoyancy aid when out on the water
👧🏼 Ensure children are closely supervised
🚩Only use between the red and yellow flags on lifeguarded beaches or areas
📣 Follow the lifeguard's advice and ask the local team if in doubt
🌊 Do not take out in big waves or heavy surf
🪢 Always secure the inflatable with a tether to an adult or sturdy beach anchor

As dusk fell on Friday (12 June) evening, the volunteer crew of Lyme Regis lifeboat were summoned to assist a motor cruiser which had broken down off the coast between Lyme Regis and Charmouth.

HM Coastguard requested the RNLI to assist at 9:13pm and by 9:20pm the crew of Lyme Regis inshore lifeboat Spirit of Loch Fyne had launched and were heading for the stricken vessel.

Calm weather at sea meant that the crew were quickly on scene with the casualty vessel, a 6m motor cruiser with two adults and four children on board. Its engine had failed and it was unable to return to harbour.

Volunteer Helm Tim Edwards assessed the situation and decided that the safest course of action was to set up a tow and recover the vessel and its crew to safety in Lyme Regis. Tim said: ‘In view of the failing light and the fact that there were no other vessels in the area, it was quite clear that we needed to tow the vessel to safety.’

Once a tow had been set up Spirit of Loch Fyne and the casualty vessel made their way steadily towards Lyme Regis arriving at 10:09pm. The lifeboat then returned to station where it was refuelled and washed down by volunteer shore crew in preparation for its next service.

This was the 15th service call for Lyme Regis RNL volunteers in 2026, the year in which the lifesaving charity celebrates 200 years in the town.

Our fundraising crew were at the Uplyme Fete this afternoon with a range of RNLI gifts from the Lyme Regis shop and our ‘Water or Wine’ raffle.

It was not great weather but everyone seemed to be having a great time.

The ‘Water or Wine’ raffle will be at the lifeboat station every day during Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week 15-23 August.

Last Thursday evening (28 May) volunteers at Lyme Regis RNLI hosted a visit from 12 members of Axminster Young Farmers Club.

The group was entertained to an hour-long tour of the lifeboat station during which they were told about the RNLI's 200 year history in Lyme Regis, what actually happens during a lifeboat launch, and the capabilities of the station's Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat 'Spirit of Loch Fyne'. They were also shown the extensive (and expensive) kit our volunteer crew must wear when they go to sea.

At the end of the visit the Young Farmers presented their hosts with a very generous donation of £776-55 for the lifesaving charity.

Lyme Regis RNLI hosts regular tours around the station between 1pm and 3pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Group visits, for adults or children can also be arranged by contacting our visits officer Colin Mears by email: [email protected]

Our thanks to Axminster Young Farmers for supporting the RNLI.

Five-year-old Fred Manuel marched into Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat station this morning (31 May) on completion of his ‘Mile a Day for Mayday’ challenge. On arrival he was given a round of applause from a welcoming party of Lyme Regis RNLI volunteers.

Fred, from Crewkerne, had set out on 1st May to walk a mile a day throughout the month and raise funds for the RNLI.

During May he has raised nearly £900 for our charity, almost twice his original target.

Well done Fred!

Five-year-old Fred Manuel marched into Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat station this morning (31 May) on completion of his 'Mile a Day for Mayday' challenge. On arrival he was given a round of applause from a welcoming party of Lyme Regis RNLI volunteers.

Fred, from Crewkerne, had set out on 1st May to walk a mile a day throughout the month and raise funds for the RNLI. He was inspired to start after reading about Mayday Mile in a RNLI magazine given to him by his uncle during a visit to Lyme Regis lifeboat station. 'I can do that!' said Fred - and off he went, walking at least a mile a day during May, far exceeding the 31 mile challenge, finishing with an impressive total of 54 miles.

Fred and his family were given a tour of Lyme Regis lifeboat station by volunteer Visits Officer Colin Mears who said: 'This is an amazing achievement by one so young. Fred is clearly an enthusiastic supporter of the RNLI who has shown great determination throughout the challenge. During May he has raised nearly £900 for our charity, almost twice his original target.

Day 2 of training for Lyme Regis RNLI volunteer crew .cadby and .bristow

Our volunteers recently focused on practical skills in the training pool, with the final video demonstrating the lifeboat’s self-righting capabilities during a capsize. Whether it’s weekly local sessions or advanced days at the Lifeboat College, continuous training is essential to keeping our crew’s lifesaving skills sharp.
