I borrowed this from Essex Freemasons as it is so well written and totally true. It certainly applies to our Province and I'm sure our Daylight Lodges in Dorset would be delighted to welcome new members. Please contact me if you would like to visit us. My email is [email protected].
Daylight Lodges – keeping Freemasonry accessible and social
Published: 17 October 2025
Essex promoting Daylight Lodges offering a welcoming space to enjoy Freemasonry during the day
Freemasonry is built on fellowship, belonging, and shared purpose — and those values should be accessible to everyone, at every stage of life. That’s why Essex is home to a growing number of Daylight Lodges, designed for Brethren who prefer or need to meet during the day, rather than in the evening.
For many older members, evening meetings can be a barrier to continued attendance. Travelling in the dark, late finishes, or a change of personal circumstances can make it harder to enjoy the full experience of Freemasonry. Daylight Lodges provide the perfect alternative — a welcoming space to meet friends, share in our traditions, and enjoy the companionship that makes our fraternity so special.
Daylight Lodges also offer new opportunities for those looking to join Freemasonry. Many men today are retired or work flexibly, and daytime meetings fit naturally into their lifestyles. These lodges provide a warm and social environment where new members can connect with like-minded people and become part of a vibrant community.
Part of the Essex Strategy
The growth of Daylight Lodges is a key part of the Essex Provincial Strategy, which aims to make Freemasonry more accessible, relevant, and supportive for its members. Alongside themed lodges and community initiatives, Daylight Lodges help ensure no Brother feels left behind simply because of when meetings take place.
Our Daylight Lodges meet across the county from Chingford to Colchester, Southend, Loughton and beyond. They welcome visitors and new members alike, offering the same sense of tradition and brotherhood, just at a time that suits more people.
How You Can Help
If you know a Brother who no longer attends evening meetings, or someone who may benefit from daytime companionship and a strong social network, a Daylight Lodge may be the perfect solution.
