The reserve team are looking forward to some sunshine at the end of this week after the unsettled weather we've been having.
In the last week, the Tuesday team started installing a stretch of fencing in Kennys 1 as a continuation of the fencing they installed in these fields last year. The ditches that surround these fields previously acted as 'wet fencing', however as we start to see lower water levels in the summer months we cannot always guarantee these fields will remain secure for livestock. Installing this fence along the ditch edge will ensure the sheep can graze safely, while leaving gaps in the fencing at designated 'drinking grips' means they still have access to water.
On Wednesday our residential volunteers started refurbishing some of our wooden signs by sanding them down, giving them a coat of varnish and repainting the white lettering.
On Thursday, we moved one of the wind break panels at Firth Lookout to provide better access for mobility scooters and wheelchair users. This now means that anyone who hires our off road mobility scooter has full access the Firth Lookout to get views across Burrowes pit.
We also had another team plant more Marsh Mallow plants around the margins of New Excavations lake, with more to be planted out over the coming weeks.
Finally, other things that happened on the reserve this week include the installation of some temporary fencing in Craggs Small, seabird surveys, and the return of a small number of cows to Floodfield. Having low density grazing in this field will maintain the rough grassland habitat, allowing for more rushes and reeds to come through.
