Club trip to Quarry Lodge on 23rd September- a busy day yesterday!

Our trip to Quarry Lodge Dahlia Farm, Pumpkin Patch and Vineyard in Norbury was fantastic. It was a little bit drizzly but we all had a fantastic time seeing the beautiful dahlias and so many other flowers too. Bird and her husband …… gave us a talk about how it all came about which was fascinating. ……. runs the vineyard which produces a sparkling w**e and thanks to Cerys, our trip organiser, we had a chance to taste it – very nice indeed. There is a lovely gift shop with the chance to buy some of Bird’s amazing artwork plus many other gorgeous things. The café is definitely worth a visit with all sorts of coffees and cakes etc on offer. You can find out more about Quarry Lodge by going to Facebook or Instagram and searching on Quarry Lodge.

Our talk on 23rd September – Paul Green, Grasses!
What a great talk! We had no slides but Paul had brought with him a fantastic array of many grasses and other plants from his nursery. He talked us through the many varieties and gave a huge a mount of advice on what to do and on what NOT to do when planting and looking after grasses. It was hugely entertaining and there was definitely not a chance for anyone to nod off! We were also delighted to welcome 11 visitors and hope that they will decide to join as members.

Paul is always welcome at the Club and I know we will be inviting him back in the future. You can find Paul at various Plant Fairs over the year and coming up soon, at the Autumn Fair at Hergest Croft.

National Emergency Briefing

After this hot dry summer, all of us gardeners have keenly felt the effects of global warming.

After inspiring powerful reactions from audiences across the UK, the RHS is encouraging gardening communities to view the National Emergency Briefing which is helping communities better understand the climate challenges affecting us all. Through this 50-minute film featuring leading experts, we can learn more, enabling us to get involved with meaningful conversations about the future of our gardens and green spaces and most importantly, start taking action.

There have already been showings locally in The Discovery Centre in Craven Arms, Ludlow, Bishops Castle and Clun. Future showings include:

Sparc, Bishops Castle at 19.30 on the 9th September
Leintwardine Community Centre at 18.30 on 11th September
Lydbury North Village Hall at 15.30on October 24th
Clunbury Village Hall, October, date to be advised.

But you don’t need to wait to see the film, you can start taking action now. Sign the petition

(https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/767687) or write to our MP calling for a prime-time televised showing of the film introduced by the Prime Minister and delivered by independent experts.

It’s not too late to take action within our communities.
We are lucky enough to live amongst people who are resilient and resourceful, willing to work together and support each other.

Has anyone else had white powdery fungus type stuff in their borders? I have come across a large patch - plants have not thrived in this area so I wanted to take a look. If you have had this, what did you use to get rid of it? I have actually dug out all of the affected soil................ but I am sure I have missed some of the fungus.
