The burial of slain 42-year-old Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi.

He was accorded a state funeral with full military honours on January 25, 1967.

The ceremony took place in his home town, Ibeku-Umuahia, in present-day Abia state.

The video shows Ironsi's parents, wife Mrs. Victoria Nwanyiocha Ironsi (in black, kissing the coffin); Eastern Region Military Governor Lt. Col. Emeka Ojukwu, Dr. Akanu Ibiam, and other mourners at the graveside, with the coffin slowly lowered to mother earth.

On July 29, 1966 Aguiyi-Ironsi spent the night at the Government House in Ibadan, as part of a nationwide tour. His host, Lt. Col. Adekunle Fajuyi, Military Governor of Western Nigeria, alerted him to a possible mutiny within the army.

Aguiyi-Ironsi desperately tried to contact his Army Chief of Staff, Yakubu Gowon, but he was unreachable.

In the early hours of the morning, the Government House, Ibadan, was surrounded by soldiers led by Theophilus Yakubu (TY) Danjuma, who later arrested Aguiyi-Ironsi and questioned him about his alleged knowledge in the coup, which he knew nothing about. That was his last moment alive.

His body and that of Fajuyi were later discovered in a nearby forest.

Ironsi died a humiliating and painful death:

Ironsi was buried three times. He was murdered by TY Danjuma and buried in a shallow grave after which he was transferred to a cemetery in Ibadan. He was exhumed and buried with state honours upon the insistence of Lt. Col. Emeka Ojukwu on January 25, 1967 in Ibeku-Umuahia.

Emeka Ojukwu and Alex Madiebo strongly advised Ironsi not to embark on this very journey to Ibadan prior to the next day of his assassination. Ironsi refused and said “everything was under control”. He never returned.

ASAKE SHIELD YOUR SWORD

After carefully listening and gathering evidence from your father, baby mama, and mother, it is clear that your father never abandoned you. Despite having little, he provided for you and took care of you even after you were left at the age of three. He single-handedly carried your responsibilities.

Your father remained unmarried for about 16 to 17 years after your mother left him for another man, dedicating himself solely to raising you—a fact confirmed by your school teacher. The foundation of your journey to becoming a global musician can be traced back to your father, who often included you in his cultural musical performances on the streets of Isale Eko. According to a neighbor, there was even a time when your father sold his only car just to support you. He was a great man.

It is evident that you once enjoyed his support and had a good relationship with him. You even sent your baby mama to live with him during her pregnancy, and despite meeting her for the first time without prior notice, he welcomed her wholeheartedly. What changed? That remains unknown.

Since your father was once there for you, and now that you have attained global success, it should be reason enough to show maturity by taking care of him without making it a public matter. If you can care for your mother—who left you at age three to be with another man—why can't you do the same for your father?

I won’t join those condemning you or calling you names. Instead, as part of a brotherhood, I urge you to put aside any grievances and take care of your father and your child.

Be proud of your roots. Everyone has a past, and no one stands alone. Using your success to fight your father and distance yourself from your own child is a sign of weakness and cruelty. It’s not too late to make amends—act now before regret sets in. If your father passes away while you are thriving, no one will truly value any grand burial you organize for him. Delay is dangerous—take action now.
