"Hate Khori" – The First Scribble - Where every scholar's journey began.

Hate Khori is perhaps the most touching Bengali tradition. It’s the official initiation into education where a child is seated on a parent’s or priest’s lap and, using a piece of chalk (Khori), traces their very first letters (usually 'A' or 'O') on a slate.

Do you remember your first word? ✍️ For many of us, our journey of learning started on a Saraswati Puja morning with a small piece of chalk and a big dream.

The Veena held by Maa Saraswati isn't just a musical instrument; it represents the "tuning" of the human mind. Each part of the instrument symbolises a different aspect of consciousness—the neck represents the spine, and the sound represents the rhythm of the cosmos.

When the Goddess plays the Veena, she isn't just making music; she’s bringing order to the chaos of the universe. 🎶 To find knowledge, one must first find their own rhythm. What’s the 'song' or hobby that brings you peace?

Why do we wear yellow? Beyond representing the blooming mustard fields (Basant), yellow is the color of the Solar Plexus Chakra, which governs intellect, self-confidence, and logic. It’s a "brain-stimulating" color meant to shake off the lethargy of winter and spark creativity.

The "Khichuri & Labra" Feast - Why Puja food tastes better than a 5-star meal?

The Bengali Bhog for Saraswati Puja is iconic. It almost always consists of Khichuri, Labra (a mixed vegetable medley), and Chutney (tomato and date) or Payesh (rice pudding). There is a specific "pandal-style" taste to this meal that is impossible to replicate at home, often attributed to the "Karpuri" (camphor) aroma in the air.

Yellow on our clothes, yellow on our plates. 🍛 Yellow Khichuri and Labra hits differently on Puja day. It’s the taste of community, childhood memories, and divine blessings. Is it even Saraswati Puja if you aren't fighting for a second helping of chutney?

Why a Swan? The secret of Neera-Ksheera Viveka.

The Goddess is often seen riding a white swan (Hamsa). Legend says a swan can drink milk from a mixture of milk and water, leaving the water behind. This symbolizes Viveka—the ability to discriminate between the eternal (truth) and the fleeting (illusion).

Wisdom isn't just knowing everything; it's knowing what to leave behind. 🦢 The Hamsa (Swan) teaches us the art of 'Viveka'—filtering the essence from the noise. In an age of information overload, this is the blessing we need most.

Many people know that students place their books at the feet of Goddess Saraswati, but did you know the tradition of ‘Abhyas’? On this day, students and artists traditionally refrain from reading, writing, or playing their instruments. It’s a day of "mental rest" and surrender—recognising that without divine grace, effort alone is incomplete.

Shubho Bijoya Everyone 🙏🏽❤🙏🏽

Thank you all for the love and support in helping us make our 9th year of puja the best yet! It is truly 5 days of solid hard work, with months of preparation going into the planning. It's all worth it for the satisfaction that we get from visitors who truly feel at home with our community puja.

A special thanks to all the volunteers who have helped behind the scenes, and the generous donations of fruit and vegetables by The Fruit and Veg Man and all visitors.

We would love to hear your feedback on your experience with Luton Durga Puja. Our primary focus is hospitality and the concept of 'sarbojanin', that is, a puja for everyone.

Please share your feedback here: https://www.facebook.com/lutondurgapuja/reviews

See you all again soon!
