Rivers State Governor Announces Shock Withdrawal from Gubernatorial Primaries

MY DECISION TO WITHDRAW FROM THE RIVERS STATE GUBERNATORIAL PRIMARIES

Fellow Rivers People,

After deep reflection and extensive consultations with my family, friends, and associates, I have taken the difficult but necessary decision to withdraw from the APC gubernatorial primaries. I do so with a full heart and with a firm commitment to support whoever emerges as the candidate of our great party.

Leadership is ultimately about sacrifice. There comes a time when personal ambition must yield to the greater good of the people. Rivers State is bigger than any individual, and at this critical moment, the peace, stability, and unity of our dear state must take precedence over every personal interest.

To my supporters who stood firmly with me throughout this journey who gave their time, resources, prayers, and unwavering hope, I offer my deepest gratitude. I understand the disappointment, the anger, and the pain many of you may feel. Much has indeed been invested and much sacrificed along the way. But please know that your loyalty and trust were never in vain. My silence over this period was deliberate and strategic, guided always by the higher interest of our state and our people.

As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace. Some truths are best borne quietly, not out of fear, but out of wisdom and restraint for the sake of peace and a greater purpose. It is enough to say that I have faced immense pressures and difficult choices, but my love for Rivers State remains greater than anything else.

I sincerely thank our great party, the All Progressives Congress, for the platform and support extended to me throughout this process. I also express my profound appreciation to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his support and encouragement.

The APC remains our collective home, and I urge all party faithful and supporters to remain steadfast and committed as we continue to build a stronger and more united future together.

Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside from participating in the upcoming River’s state Gubernatorial election not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity and I remain committed to serving the good people of Rivers state till the end of my term.

Thank you, and may God bless Rivers State.

An imam who r***d women and girls, telling them he had supernatural powers, jailed for life
Abdul Halim Khan was convicted of 21 offences of r**e.
and sexual assault. Indian national Abdul Halim Khan abused his position as a respected faith leader to abuse seven women and girls from the Muslim community between 2005 and 2014, Snaresbrook Crown Court heard.

The 54-year-old, of Old Forde Road, east London, was an imam at a mosque who persuaded each of the victims into meeting him at isolated places, including flats and quiet, hidden locations, prosecutors said.

Khan would then r**e or sexually abuse the victims under the premise he would be possessed or disguised as a jinn (supernatural spirit), the court heard.

The victims felt they had to keep these acts secret from family and friends for fear of doing them harm via “black magic”, prosecutors said.

Judge Leslie Cuthbert, sentencing, said: 'Behind a public appearance of propriety and holiness, you took monstrous advantage of women who trusted you, all for your own sexual satisfaction.'

“You brazenly r***d and sexually assaulted seven females – both children and young women. You behaved as if you were untouchable.

“You were confident that none of the victims, who came from the same community in which you were an imam, would overcome the potential shame and stigma they might sadly feel or be exposed to by reporting you.

“You were confident that if they did come forward, it would be you and not they who would be believed.”

The judge said that Khan’s criminality “may rightly be called an unrestrained campaign of r**e and abuse of women and girls”, adding: “It is the work of a serial ra**st and child abuser, but it is impossible for me to encapsulate succinctly the devastation you have caused.”

He added: “I am sure that you continue to represent a grave danger to girls and women who might be persuaded to be alone with you, and that risk will persist for the foreseeable future, especially given that certain members of the community continue to hold you in high esteem.”

Court frees man after 10 years in custody without conviction
A Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja has discharged and acquitted Ibrahim Usman, who spent about 10 years in custody without conviction, after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove the charge of defilement against him beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Rahman Oshodi, who delivered the judgment on Tuesday in Charge No. ID/4091C/2017, held that the prosecution’s case was manifestly weak and failed to establish the essential ingredients of the offence under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

The court also faulted both the prosecution and custodial authorities, describing the prolonged detention as a grave institutional failure within the criminal justice system.

Usman was arrested on June 14, 2016, over allegations of unlawful sexual in*******se with a 13-year-old girl in February 2016 at Ipaja, Lagos. However, the prosecution did not file charges until March 2017.The court noted that when the case came up for arraignment, authorities at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre repeatedly failed to produce the defendant before different judges despite several production warrants.

This persisted between October 2017 and February 2020, leading to the case being struck out on February 13, 2020, by Justice Sybil Nwaka (now of the Court of Appeal) for want of diligent prosecution after the defendant could not be produced in court.

It later emerged that the prosecution was unaware that the defendant remained in custody.Even after the case was reassigned, custodial authorities again failed to produce him between December 2023 and January 2024, despite fresh court orders. He was eventually brought before the court on March 14, 2024.

Justice Oshodi described the conduct of the custodial authorities as persistently deficient.

“A production warrant issued by a High Court is a lawful command. The custodial authorities’ failure to comply with it in this case is a matter of grave institutional concern,” the court held.

At trial, the prosecution called only one witness, a medical doctor who merely interpreted a report prepared by another doctor who neither testified nor tendered the report in evidence.Under cross-examination, the witness admitted he did not personally examine the alleged victim.

The court held that, in the absence of the medical report and testimony of its maker, the evidence could not sustain the charge.

Justice Oshodi further ruled that the prosecution failed to establish the age of the alleged victim and did not provide evidence linking the defendant to the offence, noting that key witnesses, including the complainant, were not called.“The prosecution’s evidence was so manifestly insufficient that it required no answer,” the judge held.

The court also found that the defendant’s decision to rest his case on that of the prosecution was justified, as no prima facie case had been established.

Justice Oshodi emphasised that the delay was not caused by the court but by the prosecution’s failure to diligently pursue the case and the custodial authorities’ disregard for court orders.

He noted that systems such as the Lagos Criminal Information System were created to prevent such occurrences by tracking defendants across the justice system.

“The fate of this defendant illustrates what happens when such systems are not effectively utilised. He was detained at public expense for years without trial,” the judge said.

Justice Oshodi subsequently discharged and acquitted the defendant, ordering his immediate release from custody.

“The defendant is not guilty. I discharge and acquit him. He is to be released forthwith,” he ruled.

The Story of Pelumi: Justice and Perseverance

Pelumi, with her eighteen-year-old sister, a student at the University of Lagos, was recently incarcerated at the Female Correctional Center in Kirikiri. During a visit to the welfare office, I found her and her younger sister sobbing uncontrollably. When I asked about their situation, Pelumi explained that her former boyfriend had filed a petition against her after she ended their relationship. Her sister had simply come to see her when the police arrived to take her into custody.

Unfortunately, in Nigeria, the system often favors those with wealth or influence, leaving the defendant at a disadvantage. In this case, the complainant claimed to have spent N9 million on Pelumi, threatening that she must pay the amount or face jail. Both Pelumi and her sister were held by the police for several days before being charged in court. Bail was eventually granted by the judge, requiring four sureties and other conditions, but raising the funds to meet these conditions proved extremely difficult.

The younger sister, a bright and attractive eighteen-year-old, who had only come to visit her, was also caught up in the trauma. Despite being innocent, meanwhile, the prosecutor initially refused to sign the bail bond, leaving them trapped in the system—simply to appease powerful interests, saying they would “rot in prison". This delay lasted over two weeks, even while I was handling my own case. I was shocked my prosecutor did the same to me; he refused to sign. story for another day. Nigerian police need to do better. Nigerians, a lot is going in our prision

Through persistence and escalation, the matter was finally brought to the attention of higher authorities. The prosecutor eventually realized the potential consequences of inaction, returned to court, signed the bail bond, and Pelumi was freed.

This story highlights a troubling reality in Nigeria: innocent individuals are sometimes imprisoned to appease the egos of powerful or wealthy complainants. Cases like Pelumi’s are not uncommon, and they underscore the need for systemic reform and intervention.

Thanks to collective efforts and advocacy, Pelumi’s case was resolved, contributing to the decongestion of the prison system. When our office is fully prepared, we will continue to intervene and assist families whose loved ones are held illegally in police custody or prisons, ensuring that justice prevails. This is the reality for many Nigerians—innocent lives can be disrupted because of power and wealth. But stories like Pelumi’s show that with support, advocacy, and justice, we can make a difference.

💛 At Rehoboth Foundation, we are committed to:

✅ Advocating for the wrongly imprisoned

✅ Providing legal aid and bail support

✅ Supporting rehabilitation and reintegration

Let’s stand together to restore hope and rebuild lives.
