Marking the 25th Anniversary of the beginning of the Afghanistan War, guest speaker Lt Col (Retd) Derek Plews VR will recount the harrowing Siege of Musa Qal’eh in 2006.

Hear how outnumbered British soldiers endured weeks of relentless Taliban attacks, the failures surrounding the campaign and the lasting impact on those who served.

Marking the 50th Anniversary of the murder of Captain Robert Nairac GC, guest speaker, author and researcher Alistair Kerr will explore his life, military service and tragic murder, while challenging factual inaccuracies surrounding his story.

Babi Yar Massacrre

On September 29–30, 1941, in Babyn Yar, a ravine in Kyiv, the N***s slaughtered more Jews in two days than in any other single N**i massacre, killing 33,771 Jews. In total, from September 29, 1941, until October 1943, the N***s killed nearly 100,000 people in and near Babyn Yar.

It was reported that when the Jews – men, women and children – arrived at Babi Yar, they were led through several stages where they were forced to surrender their belongings, then remove their coats, shoes, outer clothing, and eventually even their underwear.

After being stripped, they were taken to a ravine described as roughly 150 metres long, 30 metres wide, and about 15 metres deep. Upon reaching the bottom, they were forced to lie down on top of those who had already been killed before they themselves were killed.

Charity Provokes Charity Pin Badge

Charity Provokes Charity was the personal motto of James Craig, 1st Viscount Craigavon. It also became the motto associated with the Viscount Craigavon title.

The sentiment reflects the biblical principle found in Hebrews 10:24: "Let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works."

Craig believed that generosity, goodwill, and compassion could encourage others to respond in the same spirit. Contemporary commentary has also noted that he intended the motto to convey the idea that treating others with kindness could foster reconciliation and reciprocal goodwill.

This week the ASA Charity was honoured to host The Art of Healing, a powerful and deeply personal exhibition by Gladys Fletcher, at our headquarters in Brownlow Courtyard.

Through her paintings, Gladys shares memories of her childhood and reflects on the lasting impact of losing her father, Joseph “Joe” Reid. Joe was a 46-year-old farmer, devoted husband, father of five and part-time Lance Corporal in the Ulster Defence Regiment. On 31 August 1975, he was murdered by an IRA terrorist who called at his farmhouse near Keady, South Armagh.

Each painting tells part of Gladys’s story, showing how creativity can give expression to pain, preserve precious memories and support the journey towards healing.
