This week the ASA Charity was honoured to host The Art of Healing, a powerful and deeply personal exhibition by Gladys Fletcher, at our headquarters in Brownlow Courtyard.

Through her paintings, Gladys shares memories of her childhood and reflects on the lasting impact of losing her father, Joseph “Joe” Reid. Joe was a 46-year-old farmer, devoted husband, father of five and part-time Lance Corporal in the Ulster Defence Regiment. On 31 August 1975, he was murdered by an IRA terrorist who called at his farmhouse near Keady, South Armagh.

Each painting tells part of Gladys’s story, showing how creativity can give expression to pain, preserve precious memories and support the journey towards healing.

Today we celebrate a very special four-legged soldier—Brian Boru, the magnificent Irish Wolfhound mascot of The Royal Irish Regiment.

While the troops march with military precision, Brian’s main responsibilities include looking majestic, inspecting the parade and stealing everyone’s attention.

He may not carry a rifle, but he proudly carries centuries of regimental tradition—and probably a few treats in his sights! 🇬🇧🐺

🎨 The doors open this morning at Brownlow Courtyard for Art of Healing, a deeply personal exhibition by artist Gladys Fletcher.

The paintings are in place, the easels are ready, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to experience this powerful and moving collection.

Each piece tells part of Gladys’ story, reflecting memories of her childhood, the Northern Ireland Troubles, the Loyal Orders and familiar Belfast landmarks. Together, the artworks demonstrate how creativity can help express pain, preserve history and support the journey towards healing.

🎨 Preparations are well underway at Brownlow Courtyard for the opening of Art of Healing this Saturday morning.

Today, artist Gladys Fletcher has been busy arranging her deeply personal collection, with easels going into place and each painting carefully positioned ahead of the exhibition.

Every piece tells part of Gladys’ story—reflecting memories of her childhood, the Northern Ireland Troubles, the Loyal Orders and familiar Belfast landmarks. Together, the artworks demonstrate how creativity can help express pain, preserve history and support the journey towards healing.

We look forward to welcoming visitors from Saturday to experience this powerful and moving exhibition.

25th Anniversary

On 7 October 2026, we mark the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the war in Afghanistan.

Over two decades, approximately 150,000 members of the British Armed Forces served in Afghanistan. Tragically, 457 British service personnel lost their lives, including 405 killed through hostile action. More than 2,000 personnel were wounded, many suffering life-changing physical injuries.

Countless others returned home carrying wounds that could not be seen. PTSD, anxiety, depression and other mental health challenges continue to affect veterans and their families today.

To commemorate this important anniversary, the ASA Charity has produced a special 25th Anniversary Afghanistan commemorative badge. The badge honours all who served, remembers those who made the ultimate sacrifice and recognises those still living with the physical and mental consequences of the conflict.

Babi Yar Massacre – 85th Anniversary

On 29–30 September 1941, at Babi Yar in Kyiv, 33,771 Jewish men, women and children were murdered in just two days — one of the single deadliest massacres of the Holocaust. By 1943, nearly 100,000 people had been killed at this site.
