Among The King’s – The Unknown Warrior

You are warmly invited to attend a special evening of remembrance, history, and reflection at Brownlow Courtyard, Lurgan, tonight, Thursday 11th June from 7.00pm to 9.00pm for:

Featuring guest speaker and author Mark Scott, this fascinating and moving presentation explores the untold stories behind one of the most poignant symbols of the First World War — the Unknown Warrior.

Drawn from a remarkable family heirloom carried through the trenches by his great-grandfather, Jimmy Scott, Mark’s research uncovers the lives of soldiers carefully recorded within a small wartime notebook. Through years of investigation, he reveals a powerful connection to the story of the Unknown Warrior and sheds new light on the events surrounding the burial in Westminster Abbey in 1920, including the forgotten fate of those not selected — men who remain “Known Unto God”.

Part historical investigation and part deeply personal journey, this compelling talk offers a unique insight into the sacrifice, courage, and humanity of those who served during the Great War.

On 28th March 2024 the South Lurgan Community Forum met with elected reps from both the DUP and UUP in the crumbling Mourneview Community Centre. On that evening we engaged the reps with discussion around 3 pivotal areas of concern within our community.

1. Community Centre Provision in South Lurgan
2. Educational Facilities in South Lurgan
3. Sports & Recreational Facilities in South Lurgan

Following on from this, the SLCF met and in detail, analysed the answers given to them by the political reps. In short, the committee came to a unanimous decision that what was said on the night fell far short of what we feel was acceptable.

The committee informed our elected representatives that we felt that there was plenty of words but very little of substance and far too many platitudes. The committee requested action on these very important topics to seriously address the blatant inequality that exists between North Lurgan & South Lurgan.

Over the preceding period the forum has continued to push and hold our elected reps to account on these issues which has now resulted in the delivery of NEW hockey and football pitches at Lurgan Junior High School and the significant movement on the NEW community centre which had been promised for years and never delivered on.

While delivery on two out of three isn't bad, and are both very welcome, if not long overdue, it is not nearly good enough, and the lack of interest in fighting for our children and their right to be educated in their own town is very disappointing. We will continue to hold those reps to account on this issue.

Councillors, MLAs and MPs are elected by the people for the people to deliver for the communities who put their trust in them. For years we watched other communities reap the rewards of having elected reps who put their communities first while our community has been stripped to the bare bones. The days of just turning up for photos are over, we expect delivery on all the major issues facing our community today.
