In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

We Will Remember Them

Today, we remember Private William Frederick McFadzean VC. William was born in Lurgan, County Armagh on the 9th of October, 1895.

William was a 20-year-old bomber in the 14th Battalion, The Royal Irish Rifles, British Army during the First World War.

On 1 July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme near Thiepval Wood, France, a box of hand grenades slipped into a crowded trench.

Two of the safety pins in the grenades were dislodged. William threw himself on top of the grenades, which exploded, killing him but injuring only one other and saving the life of so many others.

William has no known grave and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. This bronze bust was erected by the Ancre Somme Association Charity in Lurgan in 2018.

We will remember him.

VJ Day Charity Concert

You are invited to join us on Friday 15th August 2025 at 7.30pm in Brownlow Courtyard in the heart of the historic Brownlow House to commemorate 80 years since Victory over Japan Day and the end of the Second World War.

VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day, is often overlooked compared to VE Day. While VE Day celebrations were widespread, VJ Day often lacked the same level of public engagement and commemoration, partly due to the war-weariness following the conflict in Europe and the complexities surrounding the end of the war in the Pacific. Despite these factors, VJ Day remains a crucial date in history, marking the end of the Second World War and the liberation of countless prisoners of war. It's a day to remember the sacrifices made in the Pacific theatre and to reflect on the complex legacy of the war's end.

The Ancre Somme Association Charity presents a fundraising concert to benefit the Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial. This special event will include performances by St. Mark's Silver Band, vocalist Lisa Williamson, and local schoolchildren's poetry readings.

The Northern Ireland Purple Poppy Memorial Fund was established by the Ancre Somme Association Charity to remember the animals that served from WW1 to the present day. Proceeds from this concert will help fund a memorial, crafted by Moneypenny's Blacksmiths of Portadown. The memorial will feature life-sized sculptures of a horse, dog, and pigeon mounted on a stone plinth and will be located in the Brownlow House Courtyard, Lurgan.

We have created a limited number of 2 for 1 tickets, these are only available while stocks last. Tickets can be purchased using the link below or by visiting the charity's HQ in Brownlow Courtyard.

League Of Mercy Awarded To ASA Charity Chairman.

On 11 Jul 25, a significant event took place at The Mansion House in the City of London, where Mark Jameson, Chairman of the Ancre Somme Association Charity, received the prestigious League of Mercy (LoM) for his exceptional voluntary service spanning several years. This honour is a testament to his unwavering commitment and leadership within the community, especially in promoting awareness of those who served from the First World War to the present day.

Under Mark’s guidance, the Ancre Somme Association Charity has made remarkable progress in educating the public about those who served. The charity focuses on commemorating those who fought and sacrificed their lives, honouring their memories while emphasising the importance of learning from history. Through various events, such as exhibitions, memorials, and educational programs, Mark has been pivotal in ensuring that the lessons of the past are not forgotten. Moreover, the charity encourages visitors, particularly young people, to engage with this part of history, fostering a sense of respect and understanding.

Mark’s efforts extend beyond our charity; he has shown remarkable dedication in fundraising for numerous good causes. His commitment is evident as he frequently takes on physical challenges to raise funds. Whether it involves long-distance runs, cycling events, or participation in local community challenges, Mark often pushes himself to extremes for the sake of charity. This not only highlights his determination but also inspires others to contribute to meaningful causes. In recent years, fundraising efforts have become more crucial, as many charities face financial difficulties, making Mark's contributions even more significant.

The recognition Mark received today illustrates how one individual's service can impact an entire community. His leadership style promotes collaboration and encourages active involvement from all members of the charity, making it a welcoming environment for volunteers. By fostering this spirit of cooperation, Mark has created a platform where everyone’s efforts matter, and collective achievements can lead to more profound changes.

Mark Jameson’s recognition with the League of Mercy for his voluntary service is both well-deserved and inspiring. As he continues his journey of service, Mark serves as a role model for future generations, illustrating that dedication and hard work can indeed lead to a meaningful impact in society.

Well done, Mark.
