Today we remember Rifleman William Frederick McFadzean VC.

William was born in Lurgan, County Armagh, on the 9th October 1895.

William was a 20-year-old bomber in the 14th Battalion, The Royal Irish Ri**es, British Army, during the First World War.

On 1st July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, near Thiepval Wood, France, a box of hand grenades slipped into a crowded trench.

Two of the safety pins in the grenades were dislodged. William threw himself on top of the grenades, which exploded, killing him but injuring only one other and saving the life of so many others.

William has no known grave and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.

This bronze bust, in his memory, was erected by the ASA Charity in 2018.

The ASA Charity would once again like to express its gratitude to Headstones by Milne Memorials for their recent maintenance and cleaning of the William McFadzean VC statue, in Lurgan.

The charity plans to hold its Annual Battle of the Somme Commemoration Parade in Lurgan Wednesday, July 1st, leaving Brownlow Courtyard at 19:00 sharp.

We would encourage everyone to join us as we remember those who fought and died during the Great War.

Join us as we remember the courage, sacrifice and service of the men of the 36th (Ulster) Division and all those who fought during the Battle of the Somme.

On 1st July 1916, thousands answered the call of duty, many never to return. Their legacy of courage, comradeship and sacrifice continues to inspire generations more than a century later.

Among The King’s – The Unknown Warrior

You are warmly invited to attend a special evening of remembrance, history, and reflection at Brownlow Courtyard, Lurgan on Thursday 11th June from 7.00pm to 9.00pm for:

Featuring guest speaker and author Mark Scott, this fascinating and moving presentation explores the untold stories behind one of the most poignant symbols of the First World War β€” the Unknown Warrior.

Drawn from a remarkable family heirloom carried through the trenches by his great-grandfather, Jimmy Scott, Mark’s research uncovers the lives of soldiers carefully recorded within a small wartime notebook. Through years of investigation, he reveals a powerful connection to the story of the Unknown Warrior and sheds new light on the events surrounding the burial in Westminster Abbey in 1920, including the forgotten fate of those not selected β€” men who remain β€œKnown Unto God”.

Part historical investigation and part deeply personal journey, this compelling talk offers a unique insight into the sacrifice, courage, and humanity of those who served during the Great War.
