A HUGE THANK YOU TO OUR CHAIR, ANDREW MATTHEWS!

He probably won't thank us for posting this, but we think it's time Andrew got some well-deserved recognition!

Since work began on the new Lunan Bay boardwalk, Andy has been down on site every single day, working alongside our small team of contractors and volunteers. The only thing that's managed to keep him away was a bout of flu!

And today marks another huge milestone…

✅ 175 post holes limecreted
✅ Around 8 tonnes of limecrete shifted up the dunes
✅ One enormous job DONE!

Here's Andrew looking understandably pleased after he and the team completed the last of the limecreting!

As Chair of Lunan Bay Communities Partnership, Andrew has put an extraordinary amount of time, energy and sheer physical effort into making this project happen. From the planning and coordination to getting stuck into the hard graft, he's led by example throughout.

His work ethic, determination and commitment to our community have been nothing short of inspirational. Of course, Andrew would be the first to acknowledge the fantastic team working alongside him, but today we want to shine the spotlight firmly on him.

Thank you, Andrew. We're incredibly lucky to have you!

LUNAN BAY BOARDWALK
Improving Access & Protecting Our Dunes

As our new boardwalk nears completion, we'd like to explain why this route was chosen and what the improvements will mean for visitors.

Why this location?

The boardwalk follows Core Path 103, an officially designated public access route across the dunes, established long before the current project.

The route provides the shortest feasible approach from the car park to our coastal viewing platform, while avoiding the more exposed and unstable dunes further north.

By improving this existing route, we're helping protect Lunan Bay's fragile dune environment while creating a more sustainable, long-term solution.

Designed with accessibility

The new boardwalk and switchbacks were designed in consultation with local disability groups, the Sensory Trust and Walking Scotland.

The design meets the Sensory Trust's requirements for inclusive access in managed rural parkland, a significant achievement within Lunan Bay's wild, unmanaged dune environment.

The design has also been approved by Angus Council Planning and Building Standards.

What access will it provide?

The project delivers two connected improvements:

✅ An accessible route to the coastal viewing platform, designed for wheelchair users and visitors with reduced mobility.

✅ A new engineered stepped route towards the beach, including specialist geomatting, delivered in partnership with Angus Council.

Following constructive discussions with Angus Council and the neighbouring landowner, an alternative route onto the beach has also been agreed to replace an eroded path.

Please note: There is currently no designated wheelchair-accessible route directly onto Lunan Bay beach. Improving this remains a longer-term ambition for LBCP.

We're incredibly proud of what this community-led project is achieving and grateful to all the volunteers involved.

We're still aiming for completion by the end of October!

A giant Jenga puzzle at Lunan Bay!

As one of the project team put it, “It’s like a massive Jenga puzzle down there!”

But you can now really see the zig-zag boardwalk coming to life, creating the lower-gradient route that will make access to our viewing platform easier for people with mobility challenges.

Can you lend a hand? We’re looking for volunteer labourers to help the team over the coming days. No specialist skills needed, just a willingness to muck in and do some sand digging! Even a few hours would make a real difference.

Please message LBCP if you can help, or share with someone who might.

A huge thank you to everyone already giving their time and skills. Piece by piece, we’re getting there!

Lunan Bay Boardwalk – Week 3 Update

Another really productive week on the new Lunan Bay boardwalk, and you can now start to see the shape of the finished access route emerging.

This week, work has begun on the accessible switchbacks, which will create a more gradual route through the dunes towards the viewing platform and beach. There is still plenty to do, but seeing the framework taking shape is a fantastic milestone for the project.

A huge thank you to this week’s volunteers; Gary Whyte, Gary DèRoux, Graeme Harris, Stuart Walker, Johnathan Gemmel and Petr Kolomaznik, who have generously given their time and muscle to help the team.

Projects like this simply wouldn’t be possible without people stepping forward to lend a hand, whether that’s digging, joinery, moving materials or tackling the many other jobs that crop up during a build like this.

And, as the photos show, we’ve even had a very enthusiastic four-legged site inspector, Sheba keeping an eye on progress! 🐾

The new boardwalk will eventually provide an improved route from the car park, through the dunes to the accessible viewing platform completed last year, and onwards towards the beach.

The project is being facilitated by Lunan Bay Communities Partnership, with funding from NHS Tayside Charitable Foundation.

We’re still very happy to hear from volunteers who could spare a few hours to help over the coming weeks. If you’re able to assist with practical work, moving materials or joinery, please send us a message.

Thank you again to everyone helping us make Lunan Bay more accessible for more people.

🚧 From design to construction at Lunan Bay

It’s always rewarding to see a design begin to take shape on the ground.

Our Structural Engineer, John Seagrott, was back at Lunan Bay this week carrying out a site inspection on the new boardwalk, a project that John also designed for Lunan Bay Communities Partnership.

From developing the design and helping us through the planning stages, to providing professional guidance as construction progresses, John’s expertise has been invaluable in getting this ambitious community project from an idea to a structure now rising through the dunes.

A huge thank you to John for the time, expertise and commitment he has given to LBCP and the boardwalk project.

There are many people behind a community build like this, and we’re extremely fortunate to have professionals willing to contribute their skills to help make a lasting difference at Lunan Bay.

And it’s fantastic to see John’s plans becoming a reality!

🔨 JOINERS NEEDED THIS WEDNESDAY – CAN YOU HELP?

Our new community boardwalk at Lunan Bay is really starting to take shape, but we could do with a few more skilled hands!

Lunan Bay Communities Partnership is looking for joiners who could spare some time this Wednesday to volunteer to help our team keep the build moving forward.

If you’re a joiner and can give us even a few hours, we’d be hugely grateful. This is a community-led project to create much better, more inclusive access to Lunan Bay and our dune-top viewing platform.

We’ve already had some fantastic volunteers giving their time and skills, including joiner Petr Kolomaznik who works for Mitie at Condor, thank you, Petr!

Available this Wednesday? Please message LBCP directly and we’ll provide the details.

Thank you! 💙

🚧 Week 2 of the Lunan Bay Boardwalk Build!

Things are really starting to take shape at Lunan Bay! After plenty of digging, the timber frame for the new boardwalk is now beginning to be installed.

A special shout-out today to our brilliant digging volunteers Bruce and Scott, who have put in a huge amount of hard work. A massive thank you from everyone at Lunan Bay Communities Partnership for your generosity of spirit, community projects like this simply wouldn’t happen without people willing to muck in. 💪

We’d also like to thank Angus Chainsaws, Lunan Bay Beach Bar & Cafe and Angus Council for their support in helping us move this community project forward.

There’s still plenty of work ahead, but it’s fantastic to see the new boardwalk beginning to emerge. Once complete, it will provide safer, more inclusive access towards the viewing platform for our community and visitors.

Please continue to keep clear of the work site while construction is underway and follow the temporary access signs.

Great progress and a real community effort! 👏👏

🚧 Lunan Bay Boardwalk – Work in Progress 🚧

A polite request to everyone visiting Lunan Bay over the coming weeks: Please stay off the boardwalk construction site while work is underway.

Lunan Bay Communities Partnership (LBCP) has now started work to replace the old, deteriorating boardwalk with a new and improved access route leading towards the viewing platform.

This is a community-led project, not a council construction project, and much of the work is being carried out by local volunteers alongside those supporting the build. For everyone’s safety, we need visitors to keep clear of the construction area, materials and equipment.

The project is expected to take around 6 -8 weeks depending on weather and progress, so we really appreciate your patience while the work is completed.

Once finished, the new boardwalk will provide much better access to this beautiful part of Lunan Bay for locals and visitors alike.

Thank you for supporting the project and for helping us keep both visitors and our volunteers safe. 🙏
