We are delighted to announce that Dylan Esposito has been selected by SSW for the RSA Residencies for Scotland programme. Through this Dylan will undertake a 4 week residency and our metal fabrication course.

RSA Residencies for Scotland is a scheme which provides valuable research and development opportunities for visual artists. It forges important networks with centres of artistic excellence across Scotland, ranging from traditional residency venues to specialised production facilities.

We look forward to welcoming Dylan to SSW - Congratulations Dylan!

Introducing our new team member! ⚡

We are excited to bring a new electric forklift to SSW replacing our old diesel one which had been at SSW since we began in 1979.
The new electric forklift is part of our Big Shift programme supporting SSW's work to reduce emissions and create a healthier workshop environment for everyone.

A big thank you to everyone who has supported us to achieve this and to the Unlock our Future Fund.

🌱 Community Making Space Spring / Summer 2026 Programme 🌞

This Spring and Summer, the Community Making Space programme brings together a new series of creative sessions shaped around making, growing, gathering and spending time together. Responding to the changing seasons, the programme explores a range of materials, processes and creative approaches inspired by the landscape around us and the rhythms of the year.

🧶 The Mid Week Make
Every Wednesday from 27 May until 8 July, 6pm – 8pm.
A chance to try out and develop new skills, led by a range of local artists and knowledge holders working with natural fibres, woodblock printing, wheel throwing and glass fusing.

🪱 Thursday Club
Every Thursday from 28 May until 9 July, 11/11.30am-1.30pm
A space where you can come along for shared making, conversation and learning connected to the SSW Materials Garden. Sessions will include plant dyeing, composting and worm farms, and working with cob and rammed earth.

🥬 The community fridge will be available to access every week from 11am, before and during Thursday Club.

🏺 Clay Socials
Friday 26 June & Friday 24 July, 6pm – 8pm
A chance to come together, socialise, have a blether and have free access to working with clay. These sessions will include press moulding, stamps and sprigs and making pots for the garden.

🎨 Summer Holiday Kids Club
Monday 27 July - Friday 31 July, 10am – 1:30pm
We round off our Spring/Summer Programme with our popular Summer Holiday Kids Club led by artist Josie KO.

The entire Community Making Space programme is free, with materials and food/ refreshments provided. No previous experience is needed, and everyone is welcome.

Each month, we’re spotlighting our wonderful Ceramics Subscribers who come to SSW on a Thursday and Friday through our Ceramic Subscription.

This month’s blog is by Donnah Murray of Roots and Cadence, a multidisciplinary artist and land worker based in Morayshire. Donnah shares her journey with clay and tells us what she’s been working on recently in the studio at SSW.

Ceramics Subscription offers regular studio access and a supportive space for makers of all levels to develop their own projects, with access to a wide range of equipment and materials. Subscribers can attend SSW year round, joining artists on residency in the ceramics studio.

Access Updates at SSW

Over the past year we’ve been working with artist and access consultant Laura Lulika to undertake an access audit of SSW following our capital redevelopment. Laura has reviewed and updated their previous access work with us and added more information about PPE, processes and sensory notes for our workshops and living spaces. As well as the development of a new Access and Support Questionnaire for artists coming to stay with us on residency.

It was great having Laura back with us, supported by Herfa, at the end of last year to undertake this vital work.

🔉 Caregivers Residency Blog: Alicia Matthews

Alicia Matthews, one of the five 2025 SSW x Caregivers Residency artists, has reflected on her time here at SSW this March and April with a recorded spoken excerpt of writing and images of work

The SSW x Counterflows Caregivers Residency was set up in 2020 to expand funded residency opportunities to artists who are also caregivers.

The 2026 open call is now live, there is more information over on the SSW website about how to apply. Deadline Friday 12 June 2026, midday.

Open Call: SSW x Counterflows Caregivers Residency 2026

2026 is the 6th year of the SSW and Counterflows collaboration, offering vital residency opportunities to Scotland based artists who are also caregivers.

We are delighted to offer 4 Fully Funded Residencies in 2026, thanks to generous support of the William Grant Foundation and Creative Scotland.

The SSW x Counterflows Caregivers Residency offers:

✳ A 4 week fully-funded residency at SSW bespoke to the artists’ caregiving needs and schedule
✳ £3000 artist fee
✳ £300 travel budget
✳ £300 materials budget
✳ £1000 to support access and care costs to enable the artist to take part in the residency.
✳ Weekend pass and travel to Counterflows Festival in April 2027

This residency recognises that the care of others is central to the collective survival of our world yet is deeply undervalued within our society. This is often mirrored in the structures of support created for artists.

The SSW x Counterflows Caregivers Residency is shaped to support artists who undertake this essential care work. It is set up to provide a nourishing, open and flexible residency structure to serve caregivers diverse needs.

Work Experience at SSW blog: Rita MacDonald 💫

Back in February we were delighted to welcome Gray’s School of Art third year student Rita to Lumsden to undertake a 10 day work experience placement at SSW as part of her Fine Art course.

It was fantastic to have Rita join and support the SSW team, artists and communities in our Community Making Space, Ceramics Studio and behind the scenes in the SSW office - thank you Rita! 💫
