Excelsior Trust: Relief Bosun needed.


The Excelsior Trust is looking for a relief Bosun to join us on a sail training trip for young people this month. Departing from and returning to Lowestoft, 24th June - 1st July, including 1-2 days familiarity training. In the first instance, please email [email protected]


Job description:
Assist with navigation and safe operation of the vessel
Manage and supervise crews and trainees
Other duties as assigned by Skipper

Required qualifications and competencies:
Minimum demonstrable experience as Bosun in offshore passages
Demonstrable experience in sail training with under-18 trainees
ENG1 Seafarer medical fitness certificate
IMO STCW (International Maritime Organization Standards of Training and
Certification of Watchkeeping) Basic Safety Training course
Sea survival
Enhanced DBS check
UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC)

We’re finally done! All that bending and gluing, much crossing of all available fingers, hard graft and dedication and we have a brand new rail installed. Incredible work guys!

Because so many of you are interested in how we’re creating a new taff rail, here’s a further update.
Strips of larch are bent and glued together to create a much broader framework. This frame is about 6 inches (old boat, old measurements) at each end, gradually buildings up to approx 18 inches in the centre where more strength is needed. Each section is clamped and left overnight while the glue goes off.

Update on the laminating in the mould loft!

While I didn’t need to check my spelling 😉I did need to check exactly what the process will be 🧐 The individual lathes or strakes will be laminated together to form a new taff rail (like a hand rail round the stern of the vessel); by adopting this construction we are adding strength, and using more sustainable timber. 😮‍💨
