Volunteers' Week takes place every year from 1st -7th June, and is to inspire more people to make a difference.

Cats Protection helps around 200,000 cats and kittens every year, and we here at Anglia Coastal wouldn’t be able to make such a difference without the dedication of our wonderful team of volunteers.

We have volunteers helping out in a variety of roles, and we desperately need more fosterers, to help cats until they find their forever homes. We’re always looking for more people to join our team, whether you can spare a couple of hours or a lot more. But if you still need more convincing then read on to discover some of the benefits of volunteering your time for cats, here are five reasons you should volunteer for Cats Protection...

1. It’s a great way to meet fellow cat lovers
Everyone who volunteers with Cats Protection has one important thing in common…they love cats! By joining our team you’ll meet lots of like-minded cat lovers who share your passion for moggies, and you might just make some new life-long friends.

2. You’ll gain new skills and experiences, so whether you want to put your existing skills to good use or would prefer to take on a new challenge, there is an opportunity for you. You could care for the cats before they get rehomed, or raise funds by organising local collections or events…the possibilities are endless!

3. It can be good for your mental health
Recent research carried out by Cats Protection and the Mental Health Foundation found that 87% of people who owned a cat said it had a positive impact on their wellbeing. Volunteering with cats can also be a fantastic boost for your mental health

4. You’ll make a real difference for cats
Whether you’re directly helping to care for unwanted cats, or supporting our work, the time and skills you give will make a real difference to the moggies. Without our team of volunteers, we wouldn’t be able to work towards our vision of a world where every cat is treated with kindness and an understanding of its needs.

5. You’ll receive all the support you need
No matter what role you choose to do, we will make sure you get all the training and equipment you need to maximise the use of your generously donated time. We also have a range of online courses you can take, covering topics on cat welfare as well as more role specific advice, to help you develop your own knowledge and skills. We value all of our dedicated volunteers so you can rest assured that the time and expertise you bring to Cats Protection won’t go unrecognised!

Marble is a stunning tortoiseshell young lady, who we estimate to be aged approx 1 year old.

She is very friendly and playful, but quick movements tend to frighten her a little bit, so we believe she would be best rehomed in a house with adults or older children only. She would love access to a garden, that she can play in and enjoy the sun

If you can give this beautiful girl a permanent loving home, then please contact the branch by clicking on the following link:

We would like to say a huge thank you to Anne from Bradwell, for her very kind and generous donation of some jewellery to sell and raise funds for the branch.

Our thanks must also go to former Fosterer, Dawn Bowen, who very kindly sold the jewellery on our behalf. All of the money raised will now go towards helping the cats that are currently in our care.

Thank you again ladies, it's very much appreciated!

Volunteers' Week takes place every year from 1st -7th June, and is to inspire more people to make a difference.

So, here is someone who will definitely inspire you, meet Doug. Doug very kindly helps to collect the cat food donations from our bin situated in Morrisons, Gorleston weekly.

Doug is currently in his 89th year (he will be 90 in September) and we’d like to say how grateful we are to him for taking the time to collect the food on our behalf.

So, if Doug can volunteer … so … can … you!

We are currently desperate for both Fundraising Volunteers and more importantly Indoor Fosterers. These roles are vitally important to the branch, so why not think about joining a friendly bunch of people, with a shared love of cats, who fit volunteering around their home lives and personal commitments, and who are trying to make a difference to cats in / around the Anglia Coastal region.

If you are interested and want to find out more then please email us on [email protected]

We really hope to hear from you soon!

Summer holiday coming up?

Olaf, an indoor-only cat recently managed to slip outside this home and travelled 15 miles after hitching a ride underneath a neighbour’s car, before he was fortunately reunited with his owner thanks to his microchip.

Four-year-old Olaf, who is described by his owner as “a scaredy-cat who can be afraid of his own shadow”, had been missing for four days when he was seen falling from underneath the neighbour’s vehicle as she arrived at work.

He had apparently got underneath the vehicle near his home in Braintree, Essex, and he stayed there until the driver, Abigail Harrison, arrived in her work car park 15 miles away in Galleywood.

Ms Harrison, who by chance is deputy manager at the Cats Protection Essex Cat Centre, said that Olaf was “understandably a bit skittish” but she and her colleagues at the centre got him safely into a carrier.

After a check with the vet Olaf was given a clean bill of health and was reunited with his owner, after his microchip revealed her to be someone who was practically a neighbour and lived near to Ms Harrison in Braintree, 15 miles away from where he ended up.

Ms Harrison said that a colleague ,who arrived in the car park just after her, spotted Olaf falling from underneath from her car, and they got him in a carrier. It is suspected that he must have climbed under the bonnet or wheel of the car, and then fallen asleep. Ms Harrison had even stopped for petrol on the way to work, but fortunately Olaf didn’t fall out at that point.

Olafs family had been beside themselves with worry, and had done everything to find their beloved lost pet, putting up posters, sharing appeals on social media and even having a search party checking local garages and gardens for him. But as each day passed with no sign of him they had start to lose hope and so couldn’t believe it when Cats Protection called them to say that he had been found safe and well.

This story just demonstrates how important it is to ensure that your cat is microchipped, and that you must keep your contact details up to date, even for indoor cats. Scanning Olafs microchip they were very quickly able to find his owners contact details and reunite him. If Olaf hadn’t been chipped then it is very doubtful that his family would ever have seen him again!

Our colleagues at the Cats Protection, Ipswich Branch have asked if we could help appeal for a home for the lovely Soxy & Doodle, a gorgeous, gentle pair of boys who are best friends.

Soxy is 8 years and is a sweet, shy, sensitive boy who takes time to trust and so he very much relies on Doodle, who is 11 years and an affectionate joyful fella who softly headbutts you for some fuss. The boys enjoy playing with their toys and are both foodies.

These two bonded boys were recently discovered hiding out together in a greenhouse, but they are now ready for a new start in a kind calm peaceful home where they can stay together and still enjoy a garden that they could both potter around in.

For further information on the boys then please go to their website https://www.cats.org.uk/ipswich -61620 or for further information and an informal chat then please ring Lin, their Adoption Officer, on 07773 635114. Alternatively, please email them on [email protected]
