Here is a great example of how working together we can achieve a lot, what I like to call the 'Hive Mind'. I spotted an FB post about a 'lost street' called Prairie asking for any information. I went to https://ourfallen.lowestoftoldandnow.org/search and got 7 hits, ELSIE PETHERICK, FREDERICK HAVERS, LESLIE REEVE, GEORGE SHIPLEE, GORDON SHIPLEE, FREDERICK BARNES and ALBERT FISHER which I passed on. However I noticed that we had yet to discover exactly WHERE the street was, luckily Barry Posner had shared a 1959 map so we were able to update our pages and the resulting map. Thank you to everyone who shares their knowledge and images making them accessible both now and for generations to come. Honouring Dorothy Ann Daphne Dallimer – A Wartime Heroine of Lowestoft on International Women's Day

Born in Lowestoft in 1889, Dorothy dedicated her life to the Post Office, starting as a telephone operative in 1907 and rising to Supervisor of the Lowestoft Telephone Exchange by 1939.

During World War II, amidst relentless air raids during the Battle of Britain, Dorothy displayed extraordinary bravery, ensuring vital communications remained operational. Her unwavering dedication earned her the British Empire Medal (BEM), recognising her critical role in maintaining efficient wartime communications.

After a remarkable career, she retired in 1945, receiving the Imperial Service Medal for her long and exemplary service to the Post Office.

At Messums East we want to celebrate the Post Office’s legacy as a vital hub for connection and communication and are gathering stories and information to build an archive that honours Lowestoft’s past, present, and future. If you or a loved one worked at the Post Office, we would love to hear from you!

A huge thank you to for helping us highlight Dorothy’s story and celebrate the Inspirational Women of Lowestoft.
