What we do

Hi we are the Bradford collection point for the non-profit organisation Fresh Start for Hens (FSFH). Everyone working for the organisation is a volunteer, from the admin team who work tirelessly to book rehoming dates, reserve hens for rehomers, keep other volunteers informed, arrange logistics etc etc, to the collection point hosts like us and everyone inbetween.

The farmers we work with could easily sell their hens for low grade meat (pet food etc) when they reach the end of their working lives at the young age of 18 months old, but they prefer to know that they will be given great homes by caring people. Although we can’t guarantee it, most hens continue to lay eggs for their new families for a long time to come. It is a shame for hens to be slaughtered at 72 weeks of age because they have the potential to live for many years. We have 2 hens living with us at home that are 9 years old this year and are still fit and well (although they are now too old to lay eggs).

We work with the farmers to collect the hens from the farm and transport them to collection points all over the country. This involves an army of volunteers. The farm team go early in the morning to the farm to catch the hens and load them into crates that go onto the vans bound for various destinations. The volunteer drivers then get the hens to the various collection points as quickly and safely as possible to minimise the time they are in the crates. This can be a number of hours for some, like the ones coming to us, since many of the farms we work with are in the south of England. When they get to the collection point (which for us is just our garden), they are let out of the crates, given food and water and some ‘down’ time to recover from the journey. Then the really exciting part, the people who have reserved the hens arrive to take them home. All this happens on the same exhausting day!

We ask for a small donation for each hen, at least £2.50, to cover expenses. We need to pay the farmer, buy crates, hire vans, pay for fuel etc and nobody at FSFH receives any payment for their time.
