Thanks to funding from through their scheme we were out yesterday training new volunteers how to survey for water voles ready for next year.

Plenty of signs of them in along the river.

Couple of places have become available for the Water Vole monitoring training this Saturday, get in touch if you would like to come along.

We'll be training volunteers on how to monitor water voles on our chalk streams using the methodology on Saturday in Grimsby. Once trained volunteers will then be given a site to survey in 2027. The surveying is then carried out annually to help give us a picture of how our water voles are doing.

With a real push in Lincolnshire to eradicate non-native American mink from the county we're hoping that water vole numbers will start to rise so it's really important that we have reliable data.

We were given this excellent picture of a native white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) after working on a schools project with and The Canoe River Cleaner earlier in the year, we love it!!

It was drawn by Miriam (age 7!) and highlights some of the important identification features of our only freshwater crayfish species.

This beautiful crayfish is under threat because of the impact of the introduced invasive crayfish American Signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus).

A great day out yesterday carrying out our monthly water sampling on the Waithe Beck!

It was fantastic to see the woody vegetation creating valuable habitat and adding diversity to the stream’s flow. This natural material provides an important food source for a range of species, while helping to create pools, riffles and refuges for the invertebrates and fish that call our special chalk streams home 💧🐟

Our Chalk Streams volunteers making a massive difference as always to help our flow.

Today we were on the River Rase removing some in-stream plants to help the stream flow again. Really made a great improvememt.

We’re excited to welcome the newest member of the LCSP team, Laura, who joins us as our Species Recovery Officer!

Swapping the marine environments that featured in her previous research for freshwater, Laura will be bringing her expertise to continue our Crystal Moss Animal recovery project, working alongside the University of Nottingham and The Deep.
