Modern Painters, New Decorators is a not-for-profit art organisation running projects and building community in Loughborough, East Midlands. We run a programme of art related activities including exhibitions, talks, events, markets and workshops with the aim of bringing colour to Loughborough and supporting and developing opportunities for regional artists.

Lboro Lates is tonight ✨

From 6–9pm, venues across Loughborough are opening late for a free evening of exhibitions, moving image, open studios, pop-ups, food and performance.

Across the town, you can see photography at Loughborough University, painting and work by emerging artists at Loughborough Town Hall, drawings by Studio at 17 at The Tangent Gallery, and more happening throughout the evening.
At Modern Painters, New Decorators, we’ll be screening RGB, a one-night programme of moving-image and video works by members of MPND and Studio at 17, alongside our Autumn Mini Market, open studios, and seasonal bakes and drinks from Corita. Then from 9pm, head to The Generator for the official Lboro Lates afterparty, with live reggae from Out of Karma.

Tomorrow night at MPND: RGB 📺

As part of Lboro Lates, we’re presenting RGB — a one-night screening of moving-image and video works by members of MPND and Studio at 17.

Featuring work by Sirah Brown, James Chantry, Victoria Clark, Jacqui Gallon, Sheila Ghelani, Joshua Jones, Becca Ogden, Evelyn Silver & Nenagh Watson, and Tayler Fisher.

Alongside the screening, our studios will be open throughout the evening, the Autumn Mini Market will take over the Gallery Space with independent makers and designers, and Corita will be serving seasonal bakes, sweet treats and drinks from the Creative Kitchen.

Independent makers, designers, and small businesses will fill our gallery space with a vibrant range of handmade goods.

RGB is a one-night film screening bringing together moving-image and video-works by members of MPND and Studio at 17.

Bakery by Corita
What to expect: Food & Drink
Fresh bakes and seasonal drinks by Josie Jones. Baked in our creative kitchen and served in our foyer until sold out.

Get a glimpse into the working life of studioholders at MPND—chat with our members and explore a range of ideas and ways of making.

An exhibition of drawings by Studio At 17 members. Studio at 17 is a collective and studio community supporting artists with lived experience of long-term mental ill health.

Where The Light Lives: Impressions of Charnwood & Beyond
What to expect: Painting
Fascinated by Leicestershire landscapes, coastal scenes, rugged terrains and textures shaped by time, Kendrick Snodin experiments by mixing watercolour, gouache, acrylic and pastel to enrich his visual language. Presented in the Sock Gallery.

What to expect: TBC
This exhibition celebrates a new generation of artists from Loughborough College, as they embrace opportunity, explore new ideas and step into contemporary practice. Presented in the Balcony Gallery.

Lboro Lates is back ✨

Join us on Friday 9 October, 6–11pm for a free evening of exhibitions, open studios, pop-ups, food and performance across Loughborough.

From 6-9pm, this edition includes photography at Loughborough University, painting and work by emerging artists at Loughborough Town Hall, drawings by Studio at 17 at The Tangent Gallery, plus open studios, an Autumn Mini Market and fresh bakes from Corita at Modern Painters, New Decorators.

Then from 9pm, the night continues at The Generator with the official Lboro Lates afterparty and live reggae from Out of Karma.

Everything is within walking distance, so you can make a night of it and explore the town as you go.

A look back at last Friday’s Launch Party ✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us for an evening across MPND.

In the Project Space, Kaela Galliford’s The Works brought together large-scale felt sculptures shaped by women’s labour, family history and architectural forms, following her selection for our 2026 Graduate Award. Meanwhile, the Gallery Space hosted Q***r Ecology and the Supernatural, presented as part of Loughborough University’s Symposium of the same name, with contributions spanning folklore, identity, the natural world and live performance. The exhibition was also part of our new ‘hosted at:’ programme, through which we welcome externally organised exhibitions and events into our spaces. Both exhibitions have now ended.

A few moments from the night — and a big thank you to all the artists, performers and visitors who made it such a good one.

Lboro Lates returns this autumn for another evening of exhibitions, open studios, food, independent makers and creative activity across Loughborough — all free to visit and within walking distance.

So far, the October programme brings together: LU Arts / Loughborough University Fine Art Gallery / Modern Painters, New Decorators / The Tangent Gallery / The Generator. There’s already plenty planned — from photography and exhibitions to open studios, a mini market and fresh bakes — with lots more still to be announced as venues add their events over the coming weeks. Save the date, bring some friends and spend the evening exploring what’s happening across Loughborough. Full programme and more listings coming soon.

Tonight at MPND 🎉

We’ve been installing Kaela Galliford’s The Works in the Project Space ahead of tonight’s Launch Party, 5–7pm.

Here’s Kaela and our team installing ‘a Lily’s Gate’ (2026), a large-scale sculpture made from merino wool, Palmolive soap and steel nails. The work draws together some of the themes running through her practice: wet felting, women’s labour and the forms of wrought-iron gates. The title refers to Kaela’s great-grandmother, Lily, whose working life moved between wartime service, secretarial work and sewing. Here, something that looks solid and architectural is remade through a slow, physical textile process — worked repeatedly by hand from wool, water and soap.

Also open tonight in the Gallery Space is Q***r Ecology and the Supernatural, presented as part of Loughborough University’s accompanying symposium, with performances taking place during the evening. Come by, see both exhibitions and join us for the launch.

Meet Kaela 👋

Kaela Galliford is a Welsh artist and recent Loughborough University Fine Art graduate, working mainly with handmade felt and sculpture. Her practice looks at feminist history, women’s labour and maternal lineage, often bringing personal family histories into conversation with architecture, language and textile-making.

We first came across Kaela’s work at the 2026 Loughborough University Degree Show, where she was selected for the Modern Painters, New Decorators Graduate Award. Her sculptures are made through wet felting using wool, water and soap, and often borrow the forms and patterns of wrought-iron fences and architectural structures.

You can see The Works in our Project Space from 17–19 September, with a free Launch Party on Friday 18 September, 5–7pm. The event will also celebrate a new group exhibition in the Gallery Space presented as part of Loughborough University’s Q***r Ecologies Symposium.
