Volunteering isn’t just about giving back.

It’s also about what you gain.

Confidence.
Experience.
New skills.
Connections.
A sense of purpose.

For some people, volunteering is the first step back into work after a difficult period. For others, it’s a way to meet people, improve wellbeing, or explore a new career path.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re highlighting some of the ways volunteering can make a difference - not just to communities and organisations, but to the people who give their time too.

The UK is in the grip of a moral, not just economic, dilemma as more than one million young people are NEET (not in education, employment or training.)

The Milburn Review published today highlights just how urgent it is that we work together to improve outcomes and opportunities for young people.

As the number with a mental health need has doubled, something close to our heart at Real Purpose, we feel the bigger dilemma of young people not having opportunities and purpose is tragic.

We look forward to the recommendations from the second half of the Milburn Review (in a few months) but would like to call on VCSE organisations, like us, in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to take a joined up approach to tackling the issues locally.

We’re looking for feedback on a proposed 1–2 year programme supporting people aged 16–34 in Charnwood, Harborough and North West Leicestershire who are on benefits and experience mental health challenges, ADHD and/or are autistic.

It will offer personalised support to help people move towards volunteering, learning or paid work, alongside building wellbeing and confidence.

We want to hear from potential clients, carers and professionals as your input will shape the final programme.

Take the survey here: https://lnkd.in/e52NPv3k (closes Friday 29 May).

Today plans have been announced for a new mental health strategy in England.

The proposals include a greater focus on prevention, earlier support, and improving access to care.

They also highlight the role of services, education and employment in supporting mental health.

We’ll be following how this develops and how it translates into practice.

Work can be good for our mental health. But only when it’s the right kind of work.

Recent research from University of Glasgow and University of Warwick, published in the Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment & Health, looked at long-term UK data and found:

• People in stable, good-quality jobs tend to have better mental health over time
• Moving from unemployment into secure work can improve wellbeing
• Jobs that are insecure or poor quality don’t offer the same benefits

A 2025 review in Occupational & Environmental Medicine backs this up. It found that going back into work can reduce depression, anxiety and overall distress.

So what does this mean in practice?
It’s not just about helping people find a job. It’s about helping people find the right job, and supporting them to stay there.

That’s why at Real Purpose we focus on sustainable employment, inclusive recruitment and ongoing support around mental health.

Because when work is right, it can make a real difference to someone’s life.

We often see a lot of content about why apprenticeships are good for employers but much less about how they work for businesses in practice.

Alongside National Apprenticeships Week, there are also some real changes happening nationally and locally that could affect how businesses access apprenticeships and future talent.

We’ve shared a short article setting out what’s been announced and what it may mean for businesses.
